Those are two examples of a captain knowing his ship and having the confidence to plan and execute. Or...two captains that don't know their ship. Believe me, they know their ship and have excellent seamanship skills (or perhaps Zeus was kind that day).

Maybe not. Don't forget that using a long lens can flatten out the shot, making everything look closer together than it is.

Surfing on beach cats is great fun - so it must be quite mad on a big one like this!

As for the monohull pounding into the waves - every time he bashes down over the crest, isn't he putting stress on the bulkheads? I was taught to head up the wave, but turn at the top to glide down, rather than slam down...

You are quite correct.
But it depends.
When you're in extreme conditions the main goal is to not allow the boat to turn beam on to the wave and broach in the trough. And when the waves are to close together you must adjust to the conditions.

Agree...but I'm not sure how much steerage you have at the top....probably want to be starting into the turn before the crest...but not to early.

Great footage. This Captain was also very Lucky indeed. If the ropes (Sheets) in the water would have been cought by the Prop this whole thing would probably ended quite differently.

Not rogue waves, of course.

The surfers wouldn't be there unless thye were getting breaking waves.

Terrific to see a well handled boat do those waves. Shows if you don't loose your nerve and try and turn the boat may do a hell of a lot better than what you think.

Cavitation in white water means there not much thrust either. Just got to hang on and keep the bow directly into them.

Tricky bit would watching for errant surfboard riders!
