I had never flown one before. I was having problems earlier getting it airborne which I think was due to having too large props, so i went for smaller that day. what I did not realise was that the smaller prop made it easier for the motors to turn which in turn made the idle speed too high. The crash occurred because it would not come down until i pushed the throttle down so much the engines cut off

I dad manage to fix the broken arms enough that i flew again the next day. I reprogramed the idle speed and this time managed to get 25 minutes of successful airtime and no crashes.

Maybe one day I will be brave enough to bring it onboard and get some boating videos.

It is very impressive how the autopilot with gps allows it to hold position even when it is windy

amaising. I have so much to learn from you. Once you get good you will I am sure do some incredible things. I enjoyed your video test, but had to hold onto my chair you went so high!

At least it wasn't over water at the time. That unit seems to be a very stable platform. It would be very cool to have a "marinized" version with pontoons to keep it afloat. Then, a "weaponized" version for cruising the Horn of Africa. Or, a lightweight spool of high strength thread to send a leader for a tow line to a boat in distress.

I HAD a DJI Phantom, pretty cool and stable, has GPS, altimeter, compass and solid-state gyros. I took off from moving sailboat moving about 3 knots with GPPRO camera and flew it around the boat and caught it...whew. I tried it again...oops I (it) hit my radar dome and well, I'm going to buy a new GOPRO and maybe another quad-copter, maybe some floats for the next one too.
They have some real neat stuff out there now, gyro camera stabilizers, live video transmitters so you can see what the camera is seeing.

it would not descend because the idle speed was too high. when i tried tho throttle down i went too far an the engines cut off.

i have since programmed a lower idle speed and changed the engine cut off parameter

its a case of learning the hard way

Depending on the motor, prop & battery spec i believe 1.5km high is possible.

in the video it was probably only at 100m. The gopro set on wide made it deceptively look higher.

thats my plan and fear.

i am looking at the gyro stabiliser and other upgrades which will leave me with a few spare parts that could become the basis of a more rugged marine copter for on the boat. There are few waterproof frames out there plus a few home made "tupperware" quads.

I've been looking into this for a couple years, too. I've been doing balloon and kite aerial photography for this blog I write. I picked up a 3D printer on a Kickstarter program and had been looking at 3D printable quad designs. I've been working on a platform design for salt water. Basically, the issues I see are largely with the weight and the need to dissipate heat. I was looking at very thin wall aluminum tubing and styrofoam flotation. I think if the multirotor falls in the ocean, if you can keep the batteries and internal electronics dry you should be okay. The motors are pretty tough, and can take a salt water dunking if you clean them up properly and immediately. The motors are actually not that expensive, either.

While I was looking into all this and educating myself on Arduino, I saw another Kickstarter program for the Pocket Drone. This is a tricopter, instead of a quad. Uses three motors, so gets a lot more flight time per battery. I could't build a one-off for five hundred bucks, so I signed up for this one, too. Expecting delivery in June.

I'm expecting the USA to crack down on UAV use pretty quickly. Not only the privacy issues, but safety. It's just a matter of time before someone is injured by one of these. And of course the government of the US doesn't like citizens having the same technology.

Just test flew quadcopter TBS Discovery Pro for the first time. I was feeling adventurous and for the 3rd & 4th flights did them solely over water.
