Question Please Explain What a CRUISER is in Your Book..

What makes one a Cruiser?
I'm a live aboard that gets away from the dock a few times a month and cruises for the weekend. I'm NOT a CRUISER in my book.

Listening to a discussion and adding my two cents got me thinking. I'm new to this and wanted to post to get your input.

We discussed live aboard, but to me that doesn't make you a CRUISER.
Living on a boat at the dock, doesn't make one a CRUISER.
Living on a boat for years at a dock with some cruising to get to next dock, does that make one a CRUISER.

What makes one a CRUISER?
How much time on the boat in a year?
How much time NOT at the dock?
How much time NOT on the hook?
How much travel in a year?

When does it start?
When does it stop?

What is the life of a CRUISER?

True, must start some place and time to say, "I'm going CRUISING!"

Re: Please explain what a CRUISER is in your book..

Who cares?

Not a hard and fast definition but if you live on a boat and sail between jobs, or work between cruises to support uh, cruising, you could be one

Full time cruisers sailing endlessly across oceans with a fat bank account to support the 45' Pacific Seacraft with all the expensive gear, or some young folks on a 25' sloop stopping here and there to bus tables or tend bars are just as much "Cruisers".

Then again, who cares?

According to the SSCA the definition is some kind of mileage formula offshore.

My hat off to everybody being out there doing it whether they go the distance or just hop from one island to the next taking jobs so as to eat and support the live aboard lifestyle.

It is all good, "Cruisers" or not.

Traveling with a flexible destination. Doesn't have to be in a boat.

No home address? (Mail service)
Home is where the boat is.
No slip waiting for you.
Mostly anchor out?

That's all I got

You have stumbled into a difficult question to really answer...maybe it's like the definition of Pornography....you can't define it...but you know it when you see it...

Ocean Girl,

What about coastal cruisers who liveabord, cruise and return to various destinations? In my mind, ocean crossing cruisers are a subset of "cruisers".

There are lots of different styles of cruising, too.

Re: Please explain what a CRUISER is in your book..

All good points...And love #5 reply! I so agree!

I was in public service " just because you put on the uniform or costume does make you one or does it "
learning what makes you one! That is a CRUISER
Keep them coming....
I have PO box
I have a boat
I leave the dock now and then but want to do more....cruising
Want to be a CRUISER one day...

Re: Please explain what a CRUISER is in your book..

My definition of 'crusing' is moving the boat often over a long distance.

Crusing = moving.

Now how often is up to debate.

In my mind, if the boat is moved a few times per month with no repeated ports - then that is crusing.
