Pirates

As I was setting here at my desk, The wife reads off to me from the internet about a pirate attack and a British Couple were attacked and their 38 foot boat was taken.. and they are being held for ransom.
So I'm getting kinda tired of this "crap" happening...
So how do we stop it, who do we write, contact, or yell at to get someone off their ass to go over and blow the ___ out of these jerks so the waters are safer for us to travel.
Sorry for the language but I'm getting a little pissed off about this.

In the complete absence of law and order, crime and terror become the norm. There doesn't appear to be anything of (monetary or political) value in the area, so the big boys consider it low priority.
While hoping for a happy ending to this event, I have to ask myself, Why would anyone wish to expose himself to this risk.

Good question..... maybe "no tv".. or just behind the times on the latest news hype? I remember not listening to the news for about a year while cruising. When I got back to civilization they were STILL talking about Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinski!! a full year later! I guess I didnt miss much in that year....

First....Don't sail in Harms' way.

It makes me wonder why sailors feel that they can roam the seas looking for freedom and be surprised when they get attacked.

Piracy against individual vessels is not a big deal with governments.

Same mindset goes with the city. There are predators and there are prey.

Ever wonder why you don't see one herring swimmin around?

You show up in a less developed country with your yacht...U. R. PREY.

You go to self contained resorts in Central America...or the Islands...you don't leave the compound.

Out on the deep blue you cannot count on ANYONE to help you in ANY situation.

You are your own mechanic, doctor, plumber, electrician, dentist, fireman, diplomat, lawyer, and armed forces.

I know that many believe that carrying firearms is a recipe for distaster, and not everyone is prepared to defend themselves appropriately, both mentaly and physicaly.

But if you are determined to voyage beyond the safety of your hailing port, then you need to face the possibility of encountering those who will do you harm.

As for "Don't sail in Harms' way."...

good luck with that.

Maybe 20 years ago you could have gotten away with that, but most regions of the world that are beyond Europe, North America, Austrailia and scant few places besides are free from "Harms' way".

Preparation and vigilance are the only ways to keep yourself safe.

Fat fingers maybe mako no understady.
Lots different types of pirates if we look Around we see a
similar behavior. Perhaps those bums that called at dinner time to entice some into low rate equity loans or maybe the CEO of a major corporation. Sometimes the pirates are in your own backyardo.just it's more acceptable. Cause you know themo. Guy A makey bad choice other guy dick pirate guy A loose other guy get over for a few more days.

It is one thing to scam someone out of their money, and quite another to shove a gun in their face and threaten to kill them if a ransom is not paid, regardless of the availablity of funds.

These pirates are scum who prey on those weaker than them just because of some imagined potential for profit.

I really understand the frustration this type of situation evokes. But the fact is...there are 15 international naval ships in the vacinity monitoring and coming to the aid of sailors/ships. Some experts say Somali pirates have netted more than 100 million dollars in a year. Better than picking root plants. In a dirt poor country, why wouldn't they choose piracy over....being poor??? I am NOT condoning it. I just want to stand up and go postal too. But to expect the world should stop and respond with "Its all about me the cruiser" is too naive. And also, to not acknowledge that help is within the region is also a travesty.

But I do feel you pain...

Maybe I haven't been paying attention, but last I looked pirate attacks on 40' sailboats were pretty rare. If I were to get hijacked and held for ransom I guess I'm going to die as I don't really have anything. I figure the pirates know that for the most we just aren't worth anything for the trouble. But then we know the bad guys don't think things though that much.
