If I was exposed to all those blogs and info sites and CF, I believe my choices would have been better.

2. While I was cruising the med for a year, I got the impression that all the cruisers were old and grumpy. It is nice to know that more and more young people are taking this path and I am sure it will make better people out of them.

It could make better people out of them, certainly. If they do it long enough, however, it will certainly make them old.

I'll reserve comment on the grumpy part--I'm not quite old enough to have reached that stage.

Ditto!

Writing is a job. If someone wants to pay for reading their blog, all power to him.
Shouldn't people been paid for writing?

Since when the US became a communist country?

Strange that no one here thinks that putting ads on this forum is "begging" (Hypocrisy?)

Re: PayPal Sailors

Even as a younger person, I'm as grouchy as anyone. Age plays no part.

And the young 'uns who bum around and document their lives in incredible detail bother me. Wealthy people bother me. I want a piece of their pie. So does everyone else. It's natural.

It's also natural to look down on professions that are perceived as being less valuable to society. Folks generally respect doctors more than strippers, cops more than porn stars. The free market, in its infinite wisdom, allocates plenty of value to those professions, but most of us still feel a less respect for that industry. It's not communist to disrespect the paypal sailors. It's just good old-fashioned holier-than-thou.

Frankly, I think those blogs bother me the most because they reflect the incredible selfishness of our chosen lifestyle/hobby of sailing & cruising. If everyone lived out dreams, the world would stink. Some people have to take out the trash and clean the public toilets for the rest of us.

So the old school sailors bash the begging bloggers, the small boat sailor's bash the big boat sailors and, of course, the sailboaters bash the powerboaters.

Re: PayPal Sailors

There are only 3 sailing blogs I follow daily, and one has changed so it may drop into my once a week category.

I obviously get something from those I visit daily. The PayPal button? I have used it, as that something is of value to me.

Why complain... if you are offended, don't read the flippin' blog.

Re: PayPal Sailors

I've followed the Bums for years and would gladly hit their paypal button were it not for supporting my own sailing lifestyle. And why not? Pat writes damn well and Ali's photography is excellent!!. I like their attitudes and choice of lifestyle and would much rather my money support them than going to a movie and supporting the Hollywood scumbags.

avb3 is spot on. Nobody is forced to visit the Bums website and the paypal option is there to use or ignore as you choose.

Wise words indeed oh Buddha

Have you thought about creating a blog to share your wisdom? - possibly with a Paypal button
