In my short time here I have noticed a number of questions like "How do I sail round the world for $15K" and "What is the best small boat", etc, etc.

With that in mind, have any of you lot been playing pranks?

I prefer to think of it as that plucky, derring-do attitude we brits are reputed to possess. Remember that we, as a nation, even celebrate our military defeats. Dunkirk, Arnhem, Islandlwana.... part of a long list of glorious failure illuminated by pig-headed determination and pugnaciousness that knows no bounds.

I assure you that would happen all the time on Lake Union if it weren't marinas on all sides.

One evening I was out sailing, and noticed someone had lit off a flare. Being close by, I decided to motor over rather than call the harbor police. Sails a flogging, I motored by, and saw 4 drunk guys waving flares around in a stinkpot.

"Is everything okay?"

"Yea, wer juss lightin off flares!"

I stopped my motor and sailed away. Idiots.

Poor bloke was just going round the wrong small island.

I note the British Seagull outboard on the stern as a backup.

The first outboards I had anything to do with was a Seagull. Then later used one to power a dive skiff on GBR off mother boats.

Eventually was able to leave it behind on bottom of sea as an artifical reef. RIP . Every outboard I have owned since was just so much better and thesedays brilliant by comparison.

I'm reminded of the somewhat beer-impaired jet-skiers in LA back around 1994 or so, who gazed west on a clear day and saw an island. "Dude! That's Hawaii! They got babes!" And so they took off for paradise, eventually running out of fuel in the channel, bobbing around for a few hours, and getting a midnight helo rescue (reported in Santana, as I recall, though details may have gotten distorted in memory).

And I say that with pride... everywhere else is so screwed up with bureaucracy you can't breathe without regulation... let alone be a harmless boatnut.
Mind.. its getting to be a battle to keep it like that... all these outside influences are making our Politicians think they're in charge...

If he got from California to the UK over 2 years (by boat!) then I am a bit puzzled. Maybe just a run of bad luck or not needed to acquire a fundamental understanding of tides / tidal streams (& rocks )...........nor the physcological effects of English drizzle on navigation

I was working on Egremont (RYA sail school) in Salcombe for the season as a Boat Master at the time and from what I remember his two problems were lack of knowledge about our tides and the speeds they can reach.. he nearly broached in the Seven Sisters off Portland Bill.. and also his age led him to rely over much on a worn out old engine which was fine in normal waters/conditions... but not much use in coast hopping the UK coast at the wrong states of tide... May was a pleasant month, June was a real wet n windy bitch tho'..
If he'd just headed out to sea a bit further before altering course for Salcombe he'd have been fine... thats the trouble when you only have a passage chart of the Channel... not enough detail... there's also an inshore shortcut, but its more of a local knowledge thing.. bit like the one at Durlston Head where someone on shore with a strong arm could lob a stone on your deck...
