OUTERNET: free Wi-fi to every person on Earth from space - MERGED

Forget the Internet - soon there will be the OUTERNET: Company plans to beam free Wi-fi to every person on Earth from space
• An ambitious project known as Outernet is aiming to launch hundreds of miniature satellites into low Earth orbit by June 2015
• Each satellite will broadcast the Internet to phones and computers giving billions of people across the globe free online access
•Citizens of countries like China and North Korea that have censored online activity could be given free and unrestricted cyberspace
•'There's really nothing that is technically impossible to this'
New York company says it can beam free OUTERNET Wi-fi to every person on Earth | Mail Online

Could be useful in the middle of an ocean.

If only the link was not to the Daily wail it might be more believable.
It would be great if it's true though

To be really internet access requires two way communication. Otherwise, how do these miniature satellites know what it is you're trying to find on the net?

Unless my quick look at the system missed something, it sounds like it will work basically like a radio except broadcasting a set catalog of web content instead of audio.

Would be of very limited use to most cruisers.

We can only hope this happens, we have the technology. We'll see if the good ole government takes it away though like all the other great things that could exist...

Yep, it's more like tv/radio than "internet". Only instead of buying content from tv production companies, they are going to grab content for free off the internet. You will just get whatever they decide to transmit to you.

Just so long as one of the channels features Passage Weather.

Unfortunately I'm thinking Passageweather.com is going to be pretty far down on their priority list.

I already have plenty of stuff being sent to me by radio, tv, mail, internet and every other method that other people think I want or need.

Unless this comes out way different than all the rest I'm going to give it a pass. Now if they start offering free chip implants in the brain with every subscription I may sign up.

They are going to procure funding, build hundreds of miniature satellites and launch them all in the next 16 months. Right. Where are they going to get the rockets?

1#
They buy old shuttle from a surplus vendor, fill the cargo bay with those miniature satellites and mount a giant tennis racket on the arm for launching the satellites. The Shuttle is then sold to Virgin for sightseeing
destination..
2#
They order the rockets from AliBaba (minimum purchase a container ship, price FOB Shanghai, high quality long march type rockets)
Rumors say the producer migh have issues with unpaid salaries and child labour..
