Open season on pirates!

I wonder if you have to buy a license first to hunt pirates, and is there a bag limit?

One notch in the rail. No license required.
The original owner of my boat (called Buckshee at the time) sunk a pirate boat off of Venzuela back in the late 70's.
He peppered their hull at the waterline with an old M2, put a few into their engine and then left them there.
If you look real close you can still see the patches on the our hull.
He had secret compartments all over the boat filled with various rifles and pistols.

This story is all over the internet in various languages, as a serious news item. It appears, however, to be a joke:

Wouldn't he have been wiser to go on deck and firing, rather than staying below, and shooting through his own hull?

Ha! Ha!
I suppose I should clarify. They shot at him. He then returned fire over the cockpit coaming.
The rounds fired by the pirates were coming from the port quarter. They never made it through the hull. They left gouges in the hull where they glanced off.

Question i have, is how serious is the threat of piracy? Also if sailing between ports of various countries, would hauling around fire arms raise red flags?

That issue has been discussed in ad nauseam on another thread. Run a search.
