Re: Oil Rising Again from BP Gulf

according to the lsu scientists studying the gulf , there was permanent life in the areas affected which is no longer there, only transient passing thru life forms exist there now as well as a half inch deep slime field over the bottom of the gulf of mexico directly attributable to bp spill of april 21 2010. this was publicised on national public radio in san diego.
is an interesting program.
seems the sea bottom in deepest water is not dead as a desert--has many forms of life and living things which call the place home. the very basic parts of food chain in sea start there, among other things.
they are not isolated areas but the bottom of the gulf of mexico. very interesting reports.

If you like NPR take a listen to this on oil formation from iron oxide, water, heat, and marble deep down in the earth, deeper than any fossils are found.

Re: Oil Rising Again from BP Gulf

Do natural seeps contain corexit dispersant?
No, and I think that stuff puts the oil into the water column and also lets it sink out of sight into a gooey mess down in the deep cold pressure of the sea.
Corexit maybe makes you feel better when looking at the surface oil.
People are all about external appearances.
and
Out of sight out of mind.
Bury it.

Quote:
As of Friday, May 14, 517,000 gallons of chemical dispersant have been applied to the BP oil spill in the Gulf. The chemical, Corexit–also known as deodorized kerosene–is used to break up oil into tiny drops, which then sink underwater.

Re: Oil Rising Again from BP Gulf

The existence of natural oil seeps is not a legitimate argument against the very real need for concern about the effects of a massive oil spill.

Natural oil seeps do release a lot of oil into the world's oceans (as much as 14 million barrels per year); but they do that at a much slower rate than do man-made oil spills*.

Smaller amounts of oil, released a slower rate, into a local ecosystem that has evolved in tandem with the ongoing natural seep, isn't as big of a deal as a huge amount of oil dumped quickly into a larger area of ocean.

* The Deepwater Horizon site released 3 to 12 times the oil per day, compared to that released by natural seeps across the entire Gulf of Mexico.

Just a very quick search. One of many articles from scientific sources:

Re: Oil Rising Again from BP Gulf

A comparison of the impacts of natural oil seeps versus oil spills involves much more than determining the volume of oil released. The key difference has to do with release rates and spatial concentration of the oil.

Seeps release oil over large areas of the ocean gradually throughout the year. Spills release large amounts of oil from a point source in a short time. Natural seeps and spills differ in that seep rates do not, on average, exceed the marine environment’s capacity to digest the oil, whereas spills often exceed its capacity.

Major spills overwhelm nature’s mechanisms for processing the oil, in the short term. The consequences include severe oiling of shorelines and mortality to organisms that are ill-prepared to live in an oil-soaked environment.

The fuel cell is alive and being tested on the road etc. There appear to be thousands of wind gens in my state alone. frankly i dont like being at the mercy of the mideast either, before the mortgage crisi, what started the mess was nearly $5 gas. Anytime the mideast wants to cripple our economy all they have to do is raise the price or stop the flow... anytime.

Something a lot of people aren't familiar with. "tapped" out wells slowly refill over time. The original spindletop wells in Texas that started the oil boom, and were quickly "tapped out" and abandoned, have begun producing oil again.

Apparently oil comes up from the mantle, and is trapped in formations like salt domes, and folds in shale, and other hard impermeable rock in a folded formation over a soft permeable rock. After pumping dry, they slowely rebuild pressure as the oil continues to bubble up from the deep and refills the pockets.

That said, the "Pickens Plan" run everything we can on other sources of energy, and only use oil for uses that we have no other choice, makes a lot of sense.
