Oh Miss Taylor- You Wench

Alexander Kent's- To Glory We Steer mentions the rockgut white wine that the Spanish sold the English navy for daily consumption. The English sailors called it "Miss Taylor". Nobody knows where it got it's name but they think it was a misinterpretation of a Spanish word "mistela", some type of muscatelle. Even though it (she) was "rough and not very satisfying" and if I were not superstitious, I would have renamed my boat "Miss Taylor".

Just words for us in the "basin of brine."

Take Care All..

Re: Oh Miss Taylor- You Wench

I know what mistela is and it is not a type of wine but an ingredient for a type of wine :
"Mistelle (Italian: mistella; French: mistelle; Spanish, Portuguese, Galician and Catalan: mistela, from Latin mixtella/mixtvm "mix") is sometimes used as an ingredient in fortified wines, .."

Too much trouble explaining the exact meaning in English but the word has in Portuguese (and possibly in Spanish) a negative connotation, a derived one. Mistela is used in common Portuguese language to describe something that is adulterated and it is not good.

If Miss taylor comes from mistela I don't think it would be a nice name for a boat.

I know what rotgut is and I've also experienced "rockgut" once or twice.

I can pretty much assure you that the original poster was suffering from Mistelaitis at the time of the post and thus rotgut was "lost in translation" from brain to fingertips (perhaps via the gut).
