Off the wall T-shirt

My family is large but not very close. Out of the whole group there are two deemed black sheep, myself for this sailing thing, and my nephew the artist. He is not mainstream (except for all the CD inserts and gig posters for musicians), and what comes out of his head is rather different. A graduate of the Portland Art Institute, he has returned to the Northern California coast town of Aptos to do his thing. He is probably the most receptive to cruising with his crazy Uncle Bob than any other family members, and I'm curious if anyone here understands his art and can enlighten me. Some I think I get, others, well right over my head.

You think? It would be nice for me to understand it, as he might be the only family member out of 20 that would sail with me. His dad (my brother) has the fancy and fast F-28, but he didn't sail with him, only his older brother.

Re: Off the wall T-shirt

Think of it as a movie version of a comic book grown up with some politics thrown.

Not all that different than something like Superman who after all had its own political message; "Truth, Justice and the American Way".

Re: Off the wall T-shirt

skipmac,

I think I confused my question by including the video trailer. His work for animated movie studios and musicians I do in fact understand, probably because he was given a direction for what they wanted from him. On the link "Loyal followers", this stuff is out of his head without corporate direction, and if I'm not wrong it is what atoll commented on as "anti materialism with disney overtones!" Atoll's assessment is as good as any I've conjured.

Re: Off the wall T-shirt

atoll, your good. I shared your comment with Cole, and his response was.......

Thanks for sharing my work. Id say he gets me. Anti materialism because most my stuff is surreal, metaphysical, and fantasy based, and disney because I have a "cartoony" style. I think we are on the same page.

My response to Cole......

atoll is a real gritty sailor, doing yacht deliveries and re-fitting derelict old boats to either use or sale. He has been around the world more times than me, raised his family cruising, and makes Kurt Russel's "Captain Ron" look civilized by comparison. I guess now I know the type of person that understands your art.

I guess I'm too corporate and need to let my hair down a bit. Doubt I will ever attain the level of enlightenment as atoll, but in my defense I did march on the Capitol (of California) in my youth, protesting the Vietnam war.

i also think it would be unwise to read too much into it!

kids of his generation have extraordinary computer skill's,corresponding with a very firm grasp of computer games and graphics.
this is just creativity expressing his individuality.

take him sailing hopefully you will see a whole other side, with a similar pragmatic approach to problem solving, just don't be overly critical.

it can be tough being a kid these days, there are so many more of them than when we grew up

Re: Off the wall T-shirt

He is not quite teenage, early 30's, I'm the one that is old. Here is a picture of him about 25 years ago doing an Easter Egg hunt.

Something he did at the Art Institute

Some what current, maybe 5 years ago

He is as far from corporate as you can get, but corporate seems to like his work. I think getting out sailing and seeing and meeting the characters from A to Z that make up the boating group, i.e. Thurston Howell III to Capt Ron/atoll, would give him some perspective.
