Oakland / San Francisco Marine Stores

I am heading to Strictly Sail in a week -- are there any fun antique / used Marine equipment stores in the Oakland / San Francisco area? Sorta like a Minnies in Newport?

Thanks

Michael

None that I know of. All we have here are about a half-dozen West Marines, Svendsen's and KKMI, all of which sell new stuff. The closest thing to used stuff are the once a year marine flea markets where boat owners bring their stuff that they want to sell.

I will be at Strictly Sail as well. Is anyone else going?

Last year I went, I drove down to Monterrey to see their aquarium -- there is a host of antique stores there. Found an ancient large brass and hardwood steering wheel I am KICKING myself to this day that I did not pick up for 75 bucks. Was hoping to find some stores closer to the show.

There is a consignment shopped called Blue Pelican at Grand Marina in Alameda. I have also seen another consignment shop advertised recently. Not currently in CA so can't check on it for you. You might try googling for used marine gear and check out the Latitude 38 magazine web site.

With all the boats in SF Bay, it would seem that there would be a super used/consignment store in the area but I haven't found it.

At Aquatic Park are many retired vessels of interest. Pier 39 being a nice walk away. Also Ghiradelli Choclate factory, and Maritime museum is next to Aquatic Park

Ghirardelli Chocolate, to be precise, and well-worth the visit.

And I don't know if you saw http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...tml#post274706 already, Michael, but if I were anywhere close to the Oakland Yacht Club this evening, I wouldn't miss it! I'll bet there will be any number of older Bay Area sailors there who could tell you where to find antique/used marine items.

[Edit: Oops! Belay the above, Michael. The event with John Guzzwell was actually last night. Please forgive my senior moment. <sigh>]

West Marine used to have an Outlet store in Oakland. It was in the back of one of the stores it was mostly returned items and stuff that didn't sell but you could find some deals every now and then

The West Marine outlet closed a couple of years ago. Too bad, it was the only reason I went to West Marine. Seldom found anything in the outlet store but almost always ended up buying something in the retail side. Wonder how much their retail business has declined since they closed the outlet??
