Nicknames

On another thread Erika, "Ocean Girl", suggested a thred to disclose the inner meaning of our nick names would be fun and since I agree I thought I would go first.

I've used hummingway for many years. I write songs and love to read. At one time got caught up in the way Ernest Hemingway could use such direct and minimal language to convey emotion. I'm also inclined to walk around humming or singing snatches of lyrics so when hummingway popped in my head it stuck .. there were birds in the sky but I couldn't hear them singing, no, I couldn't hear them at all 'till there was you ...

Someday you might hear someone humming in line behind you in a market, you'll turn around and it will be me!

great thread ; -)

In the early 90's I was a gamer pretty big time and was alpha and beta testing for a couple of really cool RPGs. At around that time I fell in love with the soundtrack of the film Sarafina and that was it. I've been Sara ever since: online and often off line as well...

the name was bestowed upon me by boat designer Robert Perry. It has nothing to do with how I sail, how I party, or my online activities. Unfortunately, if you knew the sobriquet's actual referent, my identity would no longer remain secret.

From the barnacle. A funny/silly re-formulation of the word in my native script.

Also because of the way I like to sail - go offshore and avoid rigid itineraries and timetables.

Well, I'm a pilot (in the aviation sense), but I am plagued by the family cat. It insists on following me everywhere and, regrettably, has shown remarkable resilience over the years and is still not dead. (I don't like cats). She is called "Minty" after her first and only herbal flea collar which made her very easy to locate.

So we've decided that although there is no hurry to go off over the horizon for years yet, knowing our luck we'll be ferrying the d*mn cat from fishing port to fishing port as she indulges her second favourite activity (eating). The boat will be purrrfect for her favourite activity (sleeping). Thus I'll be Minty's Pilot and at this point the kid's have decided that the name for the boat will be Minty's Basket.

The source of all my troubles taken 10 minutes ago (below). Note that she is waiting for the resumption of favourite activity #2.

When I was a medical student/resident there was a particular surgeon that liked to call students "newts" as a way of demeaning them. When I became an attending, I had my students refer to me as newt to counteract the name calling. Since I feel equally at home in the water and on land, the name stuck.

I feel left out! I normally just use my name as I don't like to have to explain to the dunks the meaning of a nickname. We did the same for our boat "D&D" which is Don & Dana, but can be spun into anything if the beer is flowing.

Whoa! I always thought it was Don alike Don in Don Quijote or Don Giovanni!

I got mine because I am... The Boatman...
Been called it for years... first started off in a Cafe/Bar by a beach in Spain, where they used it to run my tab for lunch/supper and after sips...
9am to 8pm on the beach and driving boats/jetbikes 7 days a week does not make you feel like cooking supper, so it was over the road for a bite before towing the whole shebang the mile back to the Marina and home...
Sorta stuck..

I chose mine because the first day I needed one it was -35 deg. c with a much lower wind chill. Not very creative, but apt nonetheless.

My name is David. and I'm from Jersey

The "Old" bit is because I discovered long ago that in internet places with a large US population folks tend to assume that a simple Jersey refers to New Jersey. Indeed in real life I have met folks who were surprised that New Jersey was named after anywhere else

Coming from a small island I am less worried than some others with leaving clues on the internet that could lead to anyone turning up in person to "discuss" anything............

My first dog was named Flash...after the Dukes of Hazzard. She was a Mutt and I like James Bond flicks... Simple enough...

Kind of like the 'porn star name' game...

What's your porn star name game you ask?

There are three ways of going about this, pick the best one for you.

Method 1. Take your middle name and the name of your first pet. Put them together for your porn star name.

Method 2. Substitute your first pet's name with the name of the street you grew up with.

Method 3. and usually the best one, take your first pet's name and the street you grew up on

Post the funniest one

What's in a Name?

My boat was the source of the name I chose. Ingrids are supposed to be slow and lethargic according to consensus. I wanted a ketch with a pilot house to accomodate the PNW climate. I bought her. Imagine my surprise when she charged across the Strait of Juan de Fuca in 5ft swells and 2ft wind waves like a race horse headed for the finish line. She seemed like a powerful live animal. It's an open question who owns who, but I am the IdoraKeeper.
