Re: New Zealand flag referendum

For NZ'rs, you may be interested to know that there is another Rugby Club in the World, allowed to wear the Black with the silver Fern.

Neyland Rugby Club in Pembrokeshire (I used to be an honorary whatchamacallit VP thingy there).

Neyland RFC

My late uncle used to meet a lot of NZ players when visiting my cousin on South Island, and managed to win a Team Blazer (Andy Earl's if I remember right) at a charity auction there, and he presented it to the Club when he got back. He was an honorary whatchamacallit VP thingy too. He also was interviewed about the link on NZ TV or Radio on one of his visits.

I think it was 1908 the All Blacks were in Neyland as their training base on their tour, and everyone had such a good time, the Club asked for official permission to wear the Black and Fern to commemorate the event, and it was granted.

Key says it was 'close'.... most would disagree

It was all about Key

$NZ27million for what? An ego trip for Key

Its just a flag FFS...

The design is rather poor. If it is a new one at lest it could be a good looking one.

Re: New Zealand flag referendum

I guess I understand them, who would want to have on his banner the banner of another country? And on the other hand who would want to have such an ugly thing for the new banner? That was close (57% per cent to 43%) I guess that with a nicer banner they would have changed.
Maybe like this?

Yes, but that's a green fern. You could change any other colour but you would never get anyone to vote for a non-silver fern.

It was seriously controversial, but the final result is one of the most immediately recognizable flags in the world. I'll be flying it from the new boat in Kiwiland, once I rig a flag halyard.

Well, maybe they can upgrade the silver fern to a gold fern?

Pollux, you may know a lot about European yachts, but you seem to know bugger-all about New Zealand or Kiwis. The Silver Fern is a cultural symbol for them. Not likely to bow to your aesthetic criticisms, even if they were warranted, which IMO they are not.

I like the silver Fern too but prefer it flown upside down as a better representation of the nations shape and the warm water towards Oz and the cold water far south.

Didn't saw the smile? I was kidding. Anyway the banner had not a silver fern but a white one. I was just pointed what seems to be the major motive for a non approval of the new banner: Bad choice of colors and bad design.

"Those advocating change argued the flag was a relic of the nation's colonial past and too similar to Australia's flag.
But the alternative design failed to gain the momentum it needed to win. While many liked it and people across the country began flying it from their homes and businesses, some considered it garish, a design better suited to a beach towel."

NEW ZEALAND FLAG VOTE | Kiwis choose between 'colonial relic' and 'ugly beach towel'
http://interaksyon.com/article/124771/new-zealand-flag-vote--kiwis-choose-between-colonial-relic-and-ugly-beach-towel

Some proposed in fact a silver Fern and not a white one:

Others proposed a Fern with different colors:

Some were not so bad regarding Graphic quality:

The basic problem is that with white and black you get a maximum contrast and with maximum contrasts is hard to make something that is not too strong or garish, as some had put it, for a banner not to look like a beach towel.

They can leave the Aussie flag alone.

As an ex servicemen in a family of ex servicepersons flag referendums are a complete furphy.

Not for Canada that got a nicer flag and one the Canadians seem to relate.

It would be a fool of a politician that would try to change it now.

"2010 Morgan Poll that asked: "Do you think Australia should have a new design for our National Flag?" was supported by 29% of respondents and opposed by 66%, with 5% uncommitted. "
