Simple solution is to find an FTP program (I use FileZilla) and copy the entire directory you need to your hard drive, that way you always have a backup.

^ best way to do it.

I use core ftp lite and it's quite simple to use. Simply login and copy all files into your hard drive.

I have a dedicated external hard drive that I use to backup my computers and online stuff once a month. Only time it gets plugged in is when I am performing the backup.

Most web hosting companys either have a regular backup as part of the package or offer one for a nominal fee - it has the advantage that you don't have to remember to back stuff up yourself and just happen to remember that it is time to backup 10 minutes after deleting something important.

I would simply save the Website text in a Word document and maybe also the pictures. Any blog might not be worth the aggro though to keep backed up regularly. Odds are that if you lost the site that you would want to do some tweeks to the layout so would be fiddling around anyway.

Personally, I would never host a site on a free site anyway, too much hassle, not enough control etc

If you want any advice about how to create a proper site on a paid for host, drop me a PM
