  • 1858 - N.B. Palmer arrives New York from Shanghai in record 82 days (64 from Anjer. Departed Shanghai 25 October)

  • 1773 - Captain James Cook crosses Antarctic Circle (66º 33' S), first recorded.
  • 1893 - Kindom of Hawai'i overthrown, Queen Lili'uokalani deposed by coup d'etat supported by USN Marines.
  • 1899 - The United States annexes Wake Island. (Currently there are competing territorial claims by the Marshall Islands and the Kingdom of EnenKio*, but the islands are administered by the USA)
  • 1917 - USA pays Denmark $25 million for the Virgin Islands

  • 1911 - Eugene B. Ely lands on the deck of the USS Pennsylvania stationed in San Francisco harbor, marking the first time an aircraft landed on a ship.
  • 1913 - A Greek flotilla defeats the Ottoman Navy in the Naval Battle of Lemnos during the First Balkan War, securing the islands of the Northern Aegean Sea for Greece.

  • 1840 - Dumont D'Urville discovers Adélie Land, Antarctica.
  • 1841 - Hong Kong Island occupied by the British Empire.
  • 1870 City of Boston vanishes at sea with all 177 aboard.
  • 1887 - The United States Senate allows the Navy to lease Pearl Harbor as a naval base.
    • This came about as a part of the Treaty of Reciprocity of 1875, ratified 1887, allowing the U.S.A. lease of Wai Momi, in exchange for exclusive rights to export Hawai'ian sugar to the U.S.A. duty free.

  • 1771 - Spain and the United Kingdom announce agreement regarding the Falkland Islands, with Spain retaining Puerto Soledad and Britain retaining Port Egmont.
  • 1817 - Diana sinks off the coast of Malaysia
  • 1873 - Northfleet rammed and sunk near Dungeness by the Spanish steamer Murillo, approximately 300 die.
  • 1906 - SS Valencia wrecked on a reef off Pechena Point, Vancouver Island.
    • The wreck led to the construction of the Pachena Light in 1908.

  • 1855 - The first bridge over the Mississippi River opens in what is now Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.A.
    • The fourth bridge to be built on the site, the Nicollet Avenue Bridge, continues to connect Minneapolis with the now-annexed St. Anthony Falls, and construction was begun before either city had officially incorporated.
  • 1856 - The Steamer Pacific departs Liverpool bound for New York, never arrives. 185 lives lost.
  • 1960 - The bathyscaphe USS Trieste breaks a depth record by descending to the deepest point in the Pacific Ocean. The depth was measured to be 10,916 m (35,813 feet) but later measurements show it to be 10,911 m (35,798 feet).
  • 1968 - North Korea seizes the USS Pueblo, for violating their territorial waters while spying.

  • 1865 - The CSS Shenandoah arrives in Melbourne, Australia
  • 1917 - The Danish West Indies are sold to the United States for $25 million.
    • The Danish West Indies are more commonly known today as the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Danes attempted to sell the islands to the U.S. in the late 19th century, but couldn't succeed in negotiations. The U.S. approached the Danes during WWI, which led to a deal finalized on 17 January, and ratified on 25 January in the USA.
