Re: Looking for Advice on First Large Ship
I'd personaly say, like I have before, that 38 would be plenty but whats 4 feet between friends?
The Cat is the way to go mate, more stable, better deck space and easier to get in and out of for the dogs and no scary angles while sailing.
Until you get used to it there is no reason why you couldn't motor all the way in one either. You do have to be carefull with weight in a Cat (thinking about putting extra fuel tanks in here) but as you won't have the extra 6 or so people that a 42 could easily take, that shouldn't be a problem.

Re: Looking for Advice on First Large Ship
well fuel will be my second project, right after i rebuild the motors for fun.
i would like to add 200 gallons total. i might also remove some water capacity.
that would give me 100 gallons more. i plan to spend some time at the guano islands. so i need it.

Just remember to keep the weight well balanced but you sound like you know what you're doing from a technical point of view so i'm sure I don't to tell you that. Let us know when you've bought it.

Yeh... I would go with a cat for the purpose you have outlined. Think fuel bladders for additional tankage just be careful of abrasion points around where you put them. Use the fuel in them first... good luck, Cpat Phil

I don't know Jack about powerboats but here's a boat I've been out on:
JARVIS NEWMAN Raised pilothouse Yachts and Boats for Sale | YachtCouncil.Com
The owner was "down to" 179K but last week a faulty waterpump took the engine out. The owner has more dough than all the lesser gods put together ...anyone's guess what kind of cash offer he might take. Boat here in NC. I dunno about the range.

Re: Looking for Advice on First Large Ship
20 MPG? Please, you're not driving a Volvo you know. Even at the consumption you'll still end up a piece of drifting flotsam, eventually a derelict crushed like a bug on the bow of a 30 knot tanker.

Come on, I know this thread has had some strange stuff in it, (treadmills, etc.) but he was OBVIOUSLY joking. The 'lol' at the end should have made that clear.

Call me crazy but this is poetry man.
you'll still end up
a derelict
crushed like a bug
by the bow of a 30kt tanker
I love it!
............
On that fuel tankage thing, the Jarvis Newman probably could be modified. I was thinking as the OP is a mechanic, he could do the rebuild himself, and might even look forward to it. It's a first class boat in near Bristol condition. It's actually 50' with overhangs and swim platform. Even I can dock it with the wonderful bow thrusters.

Re: Looking for Advice on First Large Ship
hey, can some sailboat person explain this to me?
the lagoon 420 power cat has a HUGE bedroom in the back.
why can the sail version not have that?
is there some sailing no-no that prevents it or could i add it?
confused.

Re: Looking for Advice on First Large Ship
Hi I like your dreams... I have an extra Manta 44' Power Cat. See Tethys-Society.ORG but it has only 1200 mile range. Manta Sail Cats have crossed most oceans in safety and comfort. Check them out!!
Happy Sailing
