I have bought (imported) Car Parts, TV Set, Home Theatre System, Laminating Machine, Transfer Press, Glazing Machine and other gear. I imported the gear because the price of the imported item, freight included, cost 1/4 to 1/3 the price from the UK and the States that I was quoted in Australia. When I asked why the item was so much more expensive here than overseas, the reply was always...We have to pay GST, Import Duties, Delivery Costs and other taxes on all our items.
So when I paid, say $500au, freight included, for an item from the UK, the States or China, the price in Australia was at least $1500 to $2,000 (plus in some cases)
So I figured Australia had to be the highest taxed country on earth...Either that or we have the greediest retailers.

YOU mentioned Aged care facilities closing, Which is another furfy - as more open in thier place. . Age care grew by 24000 beds since 1999. I made the point that there is NO aged care in SEA. Its not that hard really. Just read your own posts before you send them.

you may yet be right. It's wholly possible that AU may be the highest taxed country in the world (but right now my money would be on Sweden) I've only seen people paying attention to ALL the taxation in their lives in recent years. In the past, people only seemed to be aware of income taxes.

When you say "tax" to most people, they only think about the deduction that comes out of their paycheck, and the refund check they are so excited about every April. The bigger the refund the better! They don't even realize where that check came from.

I'm going to try to find some online analyses of total taxation in various countries - something that shows TOTAL dollars spent on taxation for a given budget.

Yes, I agree in this case.
Recent purchase for some Hynautics parts.
They cost $95 delivered to my door from the supplier in the USA
or $600 from BLA ( a marine wholesaler nearby) and I would have had to wait for them to arrive from the USA.

Note that both of these methods leave out employer-paid employment taxes. I would add it to both the income and taxation side of this equation to get a more accurate measure.
Further, I might add in employer payments for unemployment, health, and workers compensation insurances where they are mandatory, as these also represent a tax on the worker.

He includes inflation as a "tax", and seems to have calculated sales tax as a percentage of income instead of a percentage of purchases. He does however make a decent list of the many various taxes that are levied on US citizens, even if his computation is suspect.
Why is this so hard to find? I would think SOMEONE has calculated and published this.

I find it rather ironic that the original poster was, effectively, complaining about taxes being too high in the same breath as complaining about pensions being too low.

Like I said before - relocating to another country is your perogative, and for many people it is an attractive and effective course of action. I was lucky enough to spend some time in Portugal last year and was amazed at the amount of ex-pat British pensioners who had relocated to take advantage of (a) the relatively benign climate, (b) the relatively low cost of living and (c) the current relative strength of the pound versus the Euro.

Even if you calculate some hypothetical average figure what relevance is it unless you can compare it to the value of benefits received. Try putting a value to police and fire services, highway systems, clean water systems, public education, etc. etc. If you can't calculate the benefits you can't make a valid comparison. It's an exercise in futility. IMHO
