Re: I've had enough!

Taxes, and personal limitations on the individual, will get worse as populations increase with citizens who are less and less capable of taking responsibility for their actions and choices.
This is just what the nanny state controllers want.
Einstein's "common sense is not so common" has never been more true.

Australia IS the highest taxed country on earth, I accepted things as they were and planned to live-out my days here but, just a few weeks ago the Australian federal government reduced the amount of cigarettes and booze one can bring home to Australia tax free, it used to be 200 cigarettes and one bottle of booze of ones choice, now it's 50 cigarettes and I'm not sure about the booze.

Now today I hear on the radio our federal government plan on taxing everything bought online, costing over $100, the 10% GST. So I have decided Australia is no-longer the country I want to live in, (that's a joke, I should have said...Exist in) So I plan to sell my home and everything else I own, buy a boat and go live somewhere, where I can live in peace and some comfort in my older years. (I'll be seventy come January 2013, a retired seaman, merchant service but I'm not the most experienced sailor).

Where in S.E. Asia, or the North/South Pacific Islands, would you chose to live aboard for long periods of time?
I was thinking New Zealand was a good choice but I don't like cold weather, so perhaps Malaysia, Thailand or the Philippines would be a better choice for long term sitting on the hook, then when I'd had enough, or the law said I had to move, up anchor and move somewhere else for a spell.

The boat I'm thinking, strongly, of buying is a Fibreglass Trawler, full displacement hull, with a Maximum Draft of 4ft 6 in, with a safe cruising range of 1500 nm but I also have a beautiful Ketch on my watch-list, the Ketch has a Maximum Draft of 6ft 6in.
So if you were in my shoes, (remember, I don't like cold weather) where would you live and which boat would best suit the purpose of living aboard long term, moving on when required to do so...My reselling the boat at a later date is out of the question...Period!

I would fly back to Australia only when I had to and that would be only for three days to a week, once or twice per year.

Cheers mates,

Bill

Bill, I understand what you're saying, but ... take a very good look at those governments before deciding to cast your fate to their laws and legal systems.

Goodness me - I think I agree with savior!

I am particularly pleased to see that local shop front business who had to include GSt on their sales will now be on an even keel with internet purchases.

I've got mixed feelings about that, because the internet businesses have the added expense of shipping. As someone who has run a small business that involved a lot of shipping -- it's a big chunk of time as well as a major expense in other ways.

Internet marketers *have* to set their prices lower to offset the shipping.

I just bought a dress online. It was $80. They had a free shipping offer, or it would have been $93 (or more, if they also charged for the handling -- that was just the price of the postage on the box). That's a big price difference -- 1/6 of the cost of the dress.

The more government benefits you have, the more they're going to cost. If one is willing to live a very scaled down lifestyle, moving to another country can work, and when living costs are low, that leaves room on a limited budget for a few joys.

But look closely to the government. How well will it protect you from problems, and what protection do you have if you're charged with something?

Dont want to get too side tracked, but the local shop front has to pay for shipping as well- but instead of shipping to customer its shipping into the store, no?

Wow! All this over some taxes on cig's and booze and online purchases? Aren't you over reacting a bit? Don't come to Thailand. The only one of those that may be cheaper is local beer. As for local online purchasing, it basically doesn't exist, and if you order anything from overseas be prepared to pay the customs duty based on whatever the custom's guy decides the item is worth that day!

I think you should reconsider or at least do a trial run before you leap. Or of course, you could be like all those people in the US that swear they are leaving the country if that other guy (Obama/Romney, you fill in the blank) wins ... they never do.

Re: I've had enough!

My oh my oh my...What a reaction to an old codgers post, seeking advice on a country where he can have a better standard of life in his twilight years. Advise such as, you're doing the right thing Bill to, if you don't like Australia shove off Bill. I admit, the later was usually my war-cry...Till the start of this year when I read of the money wasted, in Victoria alone, by our clever politician's. Wasted money such as the $1 BILLION PLUS on a bloody transport ticketing system, and it still don't work properly! Or the $4.8 BILLION for a desalination plant, we Victorians will be up to payout a contract of $570 million A YEAR...FOR 30 YEARS!
Read more:
I don't think I'll be around, for the next 30 years so I guess I should be happy I'll not be paying that tax.

We, the tax payers and pensioners pay for that monstrous loss of cash, while our brilliant politicians go merrily rolling along with their golden parachutes, more hundreds of millions of dollars, paid again by Australian tax payers. Quote:

Australian backbencher will get an extra $106 a week, taking their salary to $190,550.
Combined with the massive pay rise MPs received in March, the annual salary of a backbencher has increased by $49,640 compared with a year ago – about $1000 a week.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard's salary rises by $14,430 to $495,430, meaning she is earning a whopping $129,064 more than she was a year ago – or almost $2500 extra a week. Opposition Leader Tony Abbott receives a $10,267 increase, taking his annual salary to $352,517. End Quote.
Read more:

All that cash but very little for those who have worked hard for many years and some of whom today care for their loved-ones. Australian politician waste BILLIONS of dollars while paying themselves a good salary, they also GUARENTE their own retirement payout/pension.

Some Poly pensions: Quote: While pensioners have to survive on about $640 a fortnight, politicians receive pensions worth about twice the average wage.

They include Liberal MP David Hawker, who recently enjoyed a taxpayer-funded trip to Mongolia and Bhutan, who'll receive about $120,000 a year.

Outgoing Finance Minister and Member for Melbourne Lindsay Tanner, 54, will get $111,000 a year, while ACT Labor MP Bob McMullan hits the jackpot with nearly $130,000 a year.

Victorian Liberal Fran Bailey walks away with an annual pension of about $116,000.

Another Victorian, the outgoing Member for Kooyong Petro Georgiou, will receive $91,000 a year.
We're talking PRICE INDEXED GUARENTED PENSIONS here folks...Not salaries!

I'm a firm believer in, an honest days work for an honest days pay, and, pay a man/woman what they're worth but going by the performance of our politicians...I ask you, are they not taking our money under false pretence?

Australian carers receive a fortnightly payment of $114.00, that equates to about $8.15c per 24 hour day or about 34 cents per hour and, most carers work 24/7/365.
With just a very small slice of the money wasted here in Victoria alone, carers and pensioners could be well looked after and would not, in most cases, squander the money.

As to the post on cigarettes, booze and shopping on-line, I smoke but I don't drink, I seldom smoke in public places, mostly in my own home, surely I'm entitled to a gasper in my own home after working hard all these years? And I pay tax of 62.5% on my smokes.

I do shop on-line, have done since 1995, simply because I get a much better deal! For instance, my 1994 Land Rover Discovery TDi needed a new brake master cylinder so, I checked ALL our local car-parts retailers, the prices quoted ranged between $337 to $396!
So I checked with my Land Rover/Jaguar parts supply mob in Coventry, England, they quoted me $234, postage to AU included! So I ordered the part. The part arrived in ten days. Three days later I received an email, stating, we're sorry but we OVERCHARGED you by $97! The $97 has been transferred back to your bank! I checked and sure enough, the overcharge had been returned!
Total cost for the part...$137 postage included! Now that's what I call honest and great service.
I bought just one part...I wonder, just how much I would have paid were I to buy 1,000 units? $40, $50, $60 per unit or what!
I have bought many items on-line simply because the SAME item in AU was so much more expensive...Such as a full digital Home Theatre System, price local, $3,248, same items imported, $1,079, Freight Included. Guess which HTS I bought and no...No cigar for getting it right.

I'm wondering just how many of the posters have lived overseas for long periods of time, well longer than the two week holiday experts, and in what countries. I have lived and worked overseas for a good part of my life, after and during my merchant service and before returning to AU to settle down, I worked the middle east, the States, Canada, a lot of Europe, the UK, South Africa and the Orient from Turkey down as far as India. In those days Afghanistan and most other places was a friendly place to live in. I have dealt with soldiers, customs officers, agents, and many others in authority in many parts of the world and I can honestly say, I seldom had big problems, a little bit of baksheesh and problem solved. Those poor buggers (officials) were paid a pittance while I was a rich king in comparison, so I didn't mind slipping them a few bob for their help.

I do love Australia and our people but I'm NOT happy with our money grabbing, money wasting politicians, most of whom IMHO, could not get a job running a Christmas raffle. Further to that, if you truly believe there is no corruption with our Australian officials and politicians...You must have rocks in your head.

Cheers mates,

Bill

Re: I've had enough!

Bill, all societies are composed of Makers and Takers. The problem is when the Takers outnumber the Makers. The only way governments can pay for those Takers is to raise taxes on the Makers. And, when the number of Makers dwindles, the system will not support itself. We have just witnessed a historic election in the US where the majority of people in our country re-elected a president who believes that Big government,Big taxes and Big spending are the answer to all our problems. We in the US have lost our desire to be rugged individualists, embrace Capitalism and Democracy and have chosen the Nanny State and Socialism to solve all of our problems. There are those of us who feel the same way you do in Australia but I must warn you: we have lost the battle. The problem is: where do we go? As they say south of the border: Viva la Revolucion. It's coming to a theater near you.

Thanks for the kind offer mate but I don't believe the airline would get a 45' Ketch or Trawler on-board. If I do decide to fly, I can drive myself to the airport, or have a nephew drive me, and, as I've been thrifty enough throughout my life to have all that I need in life, I can also afford to give the car to the nephews as payment for driving me to the airport.

Re: I've had enough!

Why don't you make your own wine and liquor? And there are reasons why cigarette taxes are high. I think the internet retainer loophole doesn't need to exist either, in the US cities and states are having money problems because of it. And I think a carbon tax would be a good thing here in the US too to reduce foreign oil use and reduce the deficit.
