It's International Book Week! I Know There Are Many Readers Here...

It's international book week so my friend on facebook says (actually looks like it was a few weeks ago now but what the hay...) lets play a fun game to celebrate!
The rules: Grab the closest book to you, turn to page 52, & post the 5th sentence. Don't mention the title.

"Maybe it took the soul of an artist to handle such a situation, someone so wrapped up in his own creativity, or possibly just wrapped up in himself, that he did not rebel when his wife slept with another man."

I would, but Im reading Fifty Shades of Gray and Im not sure it would meet CF policy!

Ok, but Im also reading another more appropriate book, but would you believe it, page 52 is blank?! So Im going to post page 53, sentence 5. Hope that's OK.

'In Sydney that could only mean that a strong nor'easterly sea breeze would develop in the afternoon, a breeze that would make for great racing under spinnaker.'

In the exact centre of Rashid's room stood an enormous painted wooden peacock.

From 'Haroun and the sea of stories' by Salman Rushdie.A lovely book and well worth a re-read.

In anticipation of our future liveaboard life, we are preparing for quiet evenings 'sans TV'. We are both readers, but recently we have started reading to each other aloud, with this book we are reading a chapter each night, and alternating the reader. It has been a delightful experience.

Re: It's International Book Week! I Know There Are Many Readers Here...

I'll just post the first paragraph from page 52, since the fifth sentence wouldn't make much sense without some context-

A scarlet boy flourished in the midst of the lanthorn-light - a writhing bouquet of tassles and flounces. His arms were crossed over his body. He drew them apart with a sharp ringing noise. A rod of silver light had appeared in each of his hands-a long one in his right, a short one in his left. He drew into a crouch. His companions were all shouting; Daniel could not make out the words, but the feelings expressed were a welter of fear and joy. The black-clad fellow drew out a sword of his own, something dull and clanging, a heavier spadroon, and the scarlet boy came at him like a boiling cloud, with lightning darting out of the center. He fought as animals fight, with movements too quick for the eye to follow, and the man in black fought as men fight, with hesitations and second thoughts. He had a great many holes in him very soon, and was reduced to a heap of somber, bloody clothing on the green grass of the courtyard, shifting and rocking, trying to find a postion that was not excruciatingly painful.

Fun! Since I am generally reading several books at a time, I could quote away, but I'll wait till others have posted some as well. This one was from one of my favorite series by one of my favorite authors which I am presently re-reading for the umpteenth time. Great stuff. Hope to see some stuff I recognize from others...

To restrain the Venetians
the union of all the others was necessary, as it was
for the defence of Ferrara; and to keep down the
Pope they made use of the barons of Rome, who,
being divided into two factions, Orsini and
Colonna, had always a pretext for disorder, and,
standing with arms in their hands under the eyes of
the Pontiff, kept the pontificate weak and
powerless.

Assent is the fundamental activity - more fundamental even than believing something, or desiring something.

"What the hell does that mean?" Swanson looked at Undersecretary Vandamm.
