Is it OK to Be a Little Bit Jealous ?

About 20 years ago I made the move from working on deep sea ships to working on salvage tugs with Smit Tak Salvage. I started as a makey learny mate/skipper, and for for the first 6 months, sailed with an expereinced skipper. In my case, the two I sailed with over a 6 month trip were brothers, Dutch, and I learnt that each had a sail boat.
I lost contact with them but just recently got back into contact with one of them, he sent me a picture of his sail boat which he has owned for over 25 years. I turned green with envy, but on the other hand, I dont need to spend 15,000 euro to get the hull painted

I don't know if you need to be jealous at all (I wouldn't be)!

Afterall that's not a sailing boat, that's a sailing ship!

Mate, it's ok to be a bit jealous...and at the same time thankful you dont have cough up for the fuel and Marina fees for a lovely boat like that!

The bowthruster is a pretty serious unit they have installed. The other thing that piqued my interest is the mechanism on lower part of the bow. Is that an auxillary 'rudder' of some description...can see it would more make her more maneuverable, at least while there is flow over it. I guess the bowthruster takes care of that now

Re: Is it OK to Be a Little Bit Jealous ?

The owner did most of the restoration himself, which is pretty impressive in itself. The boat/ship is also rigged up for single handing, hence the bow thruster to help docking.
I'm pretty sure that berthing in Holland, where she is kept, is free, as she is classed as an historic vessel.
Pretty sure that is a forward rudder. The boat is a Dutch sailing barge, and they would need to be able to turn in some tight corners

It is okay to be a bit envious until you watch him having to put in hours of maintenance daily...

Interesting conversion to a much more attractive vessel Much like Picton Castle.
In late 70s, spent some time on Smit Houston in local waters working refloating of an aground ship.
Can't remember if it was Mari Boeing or Lamaria.
IIRC David Gow was mate, later master of Tug Cecrops. She (Cecrops)had a massive A-frame over her superstructure with a Stang fire-fighting monitor.

Not much good on a closehaul. Them bilge keels are prettttty small. I wonder what he uses for ballast w/o all the cargo?

It's called a "flanking rudder".........used for control when going astern.

interesting!!--where is its pivot point? at the stem, or at its trailing (aft)edge.
The reason I ask is because that pivot point, I would think, would have a considerably different effect on water flow, and therefore, it steering contribution. Hmmm!!

I've seen river towboats with forward rudders to assist"crabbing" the barges.

It pivots in the middle. But if you look close it appears that it's had some tabs welded over the front to keep it from moving.

Thanks Del--went full screen and I see the pivot points and the tabs.
