I read these in cbc.ca/news, in the captions as above and thought, "At last somebody's addressing the planned obsolescence of shoelaces' stretching..." and opened it up.

Researchers Show Parachutes Don't Work

Research* published in a major medical journal concludes that a parachute is no more effective than an empty backpack at protecting you from harm if you have to jump from an aircraft.
In all, 23 people agreed to be randomly given either a backpack or a parachute and then to jump from a biplane on Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts or from a helicopter in Michigan.
Oh, there's one important detail here. The drop in the study was about 2 feet total, because the biplane and helicopter were parked.
Nobody suffered any injuries. Surprise, surprise. So it's technically true that parachutes offered no better protection for these jumpers than the backpacks.

I hate tying shoes. I walk around in Velcro-fastened sneakers if I have to wear something beyond boat shoes. Admittedly, I'm not known as a fashion maven. But I'm generally too pressed for time to deal with laces.

So personally, I think it's great that the rest of the world is finally catching up to me. Better options are good. Best of luck to all the developers who are working on these ideas!

Turns Out, a Lot of It, Actually.

Studies generally suggest that, year after year, less than 60 percent of web traffic is human; some years, according to some researchers, a healthy majority of it is bot.
For a period of time in 2013, the Times reported this year, a full half of YouTube traffic was “bots masquerading as people,” a portion so high that employees feared an inflection point after which YouTube’s systems for detecting fraudulent traffic would begin to regard bot traffic as real and human traffic as fake. They called this hypothetical event “the Inversion.”

On our last few cruises, not having easy access to "the News" (or "Tweets" or any of that Bladder Dash) made for a much more relaxing and enjoyable several weeks. We had missed all of the "Sound and Fury" that can generate so much tension and, for some, anxiety, but for the most part "Signifies...

Well, Gord - I'm not sure it's available where you are, but see if your local cable provider offers B.C.'s "Knowledge" channel. Then stick to it. You'll not be disappointed. We throw 'em a buck or two now and then, because they are on the side of the angels. The rest of the channels you'd have to pay me, handsomely, to watch.

Because I need to stay a jour with the perfidiousness of the world I do watch BBC "World News America" on PBS outta Seattle and CBC's "The National". The news is generally rotten, but the announcers are sound. "Knowledge" doesn't DO "news" at all, but the programming is pitched to people with a sound set of norms. For pure heart-warming polly-anna, try "Call the Midwife". For a truly enjoyable, funny look at people "as we really are" try "All Aboard East Coast Trains" :-)

A Royal Caribbean cruise ship, rerouted because of a storm, crossed paths last Friday with two stranded fishermen and sent a small boat to rescue the two men.
The fishermen had been adrift for nearly three weeks by the time the Empress of the Seas spotted their signal light, the company says.

Let's not. There's nothing funny about a media organization that sucks billions of dollars from the canadian taxpayer.

All in all, each Canadian taxpayer's contribution to the CBC is about $34; much less than the $124 per person British taxpayers pay for the BBC or the $77 per person French taxpayers are dishing out for their state TV.
A thousandth of our GDP is what taxpayer's contribution to the CBC amounts to.
