Thought I read the Executive Branch has more recently disregarded that?
Justice Dept. publishes stats, at least on activities that have been reported.
Harder to get a handle on the use of firearms that did not result in a reported crime. (Kleck and others have posited there are a bazillion times when a firearm was simply shown... and that detered a crime, no shots fired. Some of those have apparently been reported, some (their position argues the majority) are not ever reported. Maybe useful, but maybe more speculation (or statistical calculation) than some can accept.
FWIW, every month for the last 50 years or so, I've seen a compilation of about 6-10 newspaper clippings (per month) of incidents where a homeowner or shopkeeper used a firearm to foil a crime. Not sure those are catalogued... although something like that may have been the genesis of Kleck's
research.
