Did you ever need to use them?

Interesting photo. What's up with the freighter? Washing the decks?
|
I am guessing it was a nonlethal method of keeping Somali pirates at bay. Just my guess.

Five minutes before this photo was taken. No doubt prevented being boarded by pirates.
They also came in handy in Indonesia and Sudan. Never had to fire a shot, just let others know that I was not defenseless.

BTW I got the idea that the Bahamian gov did not find the AR on board from the 2nd paragraph of the Bahamian Facebook post in the OP.
Concerning the AK, often all they need to know to turn away is that you're armed.
First hand experience.

Absolutely correct. However, it wasn't till they could see the 85 round drums that the Somalis aborted efforts to board.

Are you hiding the third pin with your hand?
Yugo underfolder (more likely than Polish), Bulgy gas block, .223.
BIY? Fun hobby, but really? a screw build and wire tie scope mount?

Screw built yes. They are disposable after all and if you plan to hide a weapon on board, hiding parts and shipping parts is much easier with screws.
The wire tie is for the GoPro. No scope, just 15W laser. The laser actually did more than the 1000 rnds of 7.62. A scope on an AK is kinda worthless wouldn't you think?
Yes Yugo, third pin yes. But I'm not hiding anything at this point. Minutes prior I was a fraction of a second away from shooting a handful of guys trying to board my boat. Have you ever been in such a situation? Rivets or screws, 223 or 762 really doesn't matter at that point..only your willingness to pull the trigger if they step aboard your vessel matters.

How do you know that?
Incidents are exceedingly rare with evidence of firearms being of use to both keep boats safe and get the people on the boats killed.
How can you be sure when there is so little evidence, and even what is available is contradictory ?

It's funny, during my years of sailing, every Brit that I came into contact with would, within 5 minutes of discuss on any topic, ask me about US gun control. Why are the Brits so concerned about guns in the US? I eventually came up with the reply that ended every discussion on the topic..."the founding fathers wanted the government to fear the people, and they succeeded."

I look at it this way. You carry storm sails "just in case". You carry drogues and sea anchors "just in case". I carry guns "just in case".

What's that got to do with basing a decision on the available evidence?

Another funny thing is Australia and guns. I've never experience a society so concerned about banning anything and everything associated with guns, but it was the one place I could buy 1000 rounds of 7.62x39 without showing ID. Can someone explain?

I find you Brits awfully concerned about American guns and I'm not sure why? Can you tell me why?

Why don't you tell me what the topic is...OK?
Sorry if I took it off topic for you. Will you forgive me?
Tell me what kind of evidence you are looking for and I'll see what I can do to assist.
