Please just 'roll the dice' and don't cry if the outcome is not a happy one. Kind of like Las Vegas.
My point, well hidden and easily accessible are 99% of the time mutually exclusive. Of course there are those who are much more clever than police, customs and other authorities that search boats, cars and planes every day.

Just FYI, I'm not anti-gun. I started shooting when I was 6 years old and owned guns most of my life. What I object to is someone that wants to "try" to circumvent the laws of another state or country and once caught, makes life difficult for all of those that follow behind.

If you think a place is so dangerous that you have to be constantly armed to avoid being attacked by the marauding heathens then maybe the clever thing is to stay home or go someplace safer. I certainly don't take my family to places that necessitate being armed at all times so I am at least that clever.

+3 on all three points .

Unless your aim is to pursue high adventure I really don't understand those who go to places they perceive as dangerous; that are full of "marauding heathens". The world is a big place. Why would you purposely put yourself and your family in harms way? THIS is what is foolish.

Purposely flaunting the laws of another land where you are a guest: just plain rude.

I always figured you're in much higher danger of attack on shore provisioning, laundry, site seeing etc, vs being on the boat. I can't imagine most of the people with firearms aboard also take them to shore all the time.

And just because someone doesn't see the logic in cruising with a firearm, doesn't make them anti-gun.

Honestly, I always get a pretty good laugh when I hear the nonsense from people who think they have outsmarted the customs agents. Who think that they have found a hiding place that those guys--who make their living by finding hiding places--would never think to look. If they haven't found your hiding place yet, it is only because they haven't really tried. Sooner or later, they will.

And then, caught at the game, you absolutely KNOW that the violator is going to squeal like a stuck pig about how unfair it is, and how his rights are being violated, and other crap like that.

Yep. You really do have to get a laugh out of such foolish arrogance.

I just wonder... How many get caught coming back to the US with hidden firearms? This was in a email that I got from US CBP yesterday...

"There are certain entry requirements of which boaters should be particularly aware. One is the requirement to obtain approval from ATF - in advance - for the entry of all firearms onboard the vessel. If you do not have the approved ATF Form 6 for firearms, CBP will detain them."

So far, there is no evidence that PCM is an active cruiser, so all his bluster may be theoretical. In the event that he does go cruising, he will get chance to pit his extreme cleverness against the pitiful attempts of the authorities to find his accessible but hidden weapons. Who knows how that contest will play out?

What I do know is that I hope not to follow in his wake into some pleasant cruising destination, for I have found that when incidents like those described above (yotties arrested for weapon violations), life becomes harder for all the other cruisers in the area.

ATF Form 6 is for import of firearms, not temporarily taking a firearm out of the county, and returning with it.

For the latter, you need to fill out CBP Form 4457 prior to departure. (There's some sort of new computerized system, but they don't seem to have it working, yet.)

+1 Exactly.

Surely one of the basic tenants of any traveller is to respect the laws of the land you are a guest in. If you can't do this, then don't go.
