Re: If you had to Pick One - Captain Phillips or All is Lost?

Capt. Phillips hands down. All is Lost was unbelievable stupid and boring. Watched all I could on Netflix for about 20 minutes and turned it off. One of the worst movies I have ever seen

I haven't seen Captain Phillips, but I tried to watch "All is Lost". After about 30 minutes, I just couldn't take it any longer and turned it off.

I don't think anybody on the production of that movie had ever been on a sailboat before in their life.

Actually I though both movies were junk, The Captain Philips story was hyped to add dramatic effect, and in that regard departed significantly from the reality, The redford one never had any semblance of reality in it from the start.

All is lost , I know am a merchant marine officer and have sailed with Phillips and know crew that was on board at the time. I have also spoken directly to lawyers in regards to the on going court case against Phillips and Maersk Lines. What he did was an even a bigger mistake that all the little ones redford made, he defied instructions and choose not to sail the track that he was instructed to take in order to catch the 3 kt current along the coast

Yes indeed , the real issues were of course glossed over in the film , which is why it departed significantly from reality

this makes a good summary

Captain Phillips True Story vs Movie - Real Captain Richard Phillips

Re: If you had to Pick One - Captain Phillips or All is Lost?

I did hear a somewhat humorous version of the exchange with the pirate Muse who was on the Navy ship when the other three pirates were killed. Apparently, he had a hard time understanding that the others were dead and kept trying to negotiate for money, even after he was handcuffed, and even as they kept trying to tell him that the other pirates were dead and Phillips had been rescued.

I'm probably in the minority, but I liked Sea Wolf (2009)... Tim Roth's character is such an Ass... I'll second the vote for Maiden Trip.

Re: If you had to Pick One - Captain Phillips or All is Lost?

Watching redford was like sticking steel bolts through my skull. I saw nothing whitty in his character. Pulling out a sextant? Really? What about that hand held GPS backup you have? How about a handheld radio? Who the hell goes to sea without a handheld GPS and radio? Let's not even start with his sailing ability.. how about keeping that boat moving dummy?

IMO Captain Phillips was about dealing with a situation that was dealt to him. I mean, you are a commercial captain... its not like you are given a crew of SEALS to work with.. they are loaders and bosons and whatnot. Merchant marine folk with a different set of skills. They were given a job to deliver goods from point a to point b and that is what they do.

I think it was also about pointing out the absurdity of the precautions that the shipping companies use for anti-piracy. For example, pointing out how useless the pirate gates were (after I assume he received training saying that they would work), or that there was no "safe room" for the crew, or that all they have against ak-47's is a bunch of hoses.

Maiden Trip was very very good.

I agree, Maiden Trip was one of the best movies I've seen in a couple of years
