Re: if you had to pick one - Captain Phillips or All is Lost??

I'd want tom hanks. I couldn't stand watching bob Redford stumble around in slow motion staring at the coffee cups for ten minutes after the kettle has boiled wondering what to do next..in silence with a dumbstruck look on his face, even Kurt Russel would be better than Bob

Seconded. Captain Ron was a great movie and it covered the hot topics of guns on board and proper anchoring techniques.

As for All is Lost. Redford is great but this movie made me angry. He made so many mistakes that I ended up yelling at him and had to turn the movie off several times and calm down before I could turn it on again. He had all kinds of safety equipment and spares but he was so slow re-acting and setting priorities for getting things back under control. I hope my girlfriend never sees this movie or we never go cruising!!!
It wouldn't make a great movie, though, would it? Boat hits container, rapidly and skillfully makes the necessary repairs, continues on journey.

It would be like a lot of TV shows, 20 minutes of action and 40 mins of ads in an hour.

Coops.

Re: if you had to pick one - Captain Phillips or All is Lost??

I'm a Captain Phillips fan. I've been in the Gulf of Aden, been chased by pirates, and could really identify with the captain. The scenes were realistic and the characters were real.

In contrast, All is Lost was filmed in a swimming pool and was a waste of film.

For those on Netflix, there are two documentary nuggets much more worth watching. Maiden Trip and Wild Eyes are both about young girls sailing alone around the world. Huge contrasts between the two girls and their programs, but realistic blue water footage in both films. If you wondered why Rebel Heart abandoned their boat, just look into Abby Sunderland's eyes when she is filming herself at sea.

Better still, how about the entire boxed set of Hornblower?

Captain Phillips, no contest. Tried watching All is Lost on NetFlix and gave up quickly. So many technical and continuity screw ups, gave up watching it after 15 minutes or so.

They play this movie once a year at Svendborg, put the engineers on one side, and the mates and skippers on the other side of the cinema, provide lots of beer and wait for the inevitable outcome

Re: if you had to pick one - Captain Phillips or All is Lost??

I believe the dvd is standard kit on all Danish ships... first came across it when we had 'Tor Futura' on bareboat charter for a spell just before I retired.... watch once with subtitles ... then watch without.. so you dont miss the detail....
I've sailed with all of them... even the 'old man' reminds me of someone... 'mirror mirror on the wall' etc...

I was going to say Pirates of the Caribbean, but then I saw the vote for Captain Ron.....

I love Tom Hanks, and Robert Redford but didn't particularly care for either movie...
