I don't know how to stop them, but for your consideration, its customary in this part of the world for local fishermen to approach you trying to sell the morning catch.
Shooting people in approaching boats may not be the most hospitable thing to do

Reminds me of the old "All in the Family" tv show. Archie Bunker's solution to airplane hijacking was "All ya gotta do is give every passenger a gun when he boards the plane..Nobody will dare to make a false move"

seriously until we sort the problems in Somalia ( or the Somalis, eventually sort the problems themselves. the pirate problem will continue. Utimately the country has to police itself. The solution however never involves arming private cruisers

Listen DOJ, you might like to treat this as a joke, but councelling could work in some serious piracy situations.

I've often felt like reporting our local yachting store to the Trading Standards Council. If we all held hands and did it together, we could maybe stamp it out without resorting to firearms.

We did something like that, here in Thunder Bay, Canada.
Objecting to high local prices, we all chose to travel to Duluth Mn (USA) or Toronto (1000 miles away) to make our major purchases.
Now we don't have any local chandlers, at all; and must travel or mail order, for virtually all marine supplies.

Arming the boats may be of course the matter of choice of individual sailor, but will not solve the situation for sure. Our cruisers are not proper auxiliary cruisers anyway. The heavy weapons supply in Somalia looks to be unlimited, so pirates will always have the overwhelming firepower.
The problem is that in contemporary world we are quite unprepared to deal with a case of the country not self policing against the piracy or of the country actively supporting piracy.
In XVIII/XIX centuries the piracy was effectively wiped out from main sea lanes by RN and USN - but the "hang them high" policy was than applied, and this is widely unacceptable today.
As putting all the sea traffic in Indian Ocean into well protected convoys is rather unpracticable, we are left with only choice of doing something about Somalia itself, but WHAT

I doubt if conciliation would have any affect. There are too many groups wanting piracy to continue including the pirates, the network of organised crime behind them, the radical religious nuts, the warlords, the NGO's involved, the negotiators in all countries, Al Queda in Yemen and Somalia, Iran (even though they have a navy ship there).

Anything that destabilizes the western world would be supported by a myriad of countries even if they occasionally lose a ship etc.. China and Russia as well as the whole Arab world.

Many people over there recite bits talking about putting people to the sword. That is the only sort of counseling they understand.

It might be possible to work with the Somalia government if an effective one eisted but for all intents and purposes Somalia has not been governed for 20 years. Western nations interests in the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz supercede any action that will inflame the region. The only thing left is protecting the ships themselves and given the commercial traffic that uses these waters I can't see them taking the concerns of a few pleasure sailors very seriously.
