How to Say 'Thank You'

Sometimes I get to go sailing on someone else's boat, and it's struck me that I don't know any really good ways to say "Thank you for the sailing."

So, what's the best way? Conventionally a card a few days latter, maybe a small gift on arrival is normal for social occasions in Australia, but on a boat?

Contributing to lunch would be one way, but sometimes we don't know the arrangements.

So what "Thank yous." have you received, and what made them so good.

wine is also popular, although probably best to avoid reds -- Some owners are very concerned about spills -- unless you know the owners' preferences...champagne is usually very safe...and, of course, more beer

A thank you note is always nice!

I've had friends send me photos of our outing...that's a great thing...digital or otherwise.

I have one friend's wife, who sends cartoons done in crayon...with her thank you note...

Mostly, being good company and not breaking anything satisfies me...;-)

Your post implies I believe a day sail and in these cases either as the guest or the host I would give/ appreciate an offer of drinks (beers or wine) and/or a food contribution salad etc. A weekend certainly an invitation for lumch or dinner and a bottle of rum/whisky or vodka. A longer trip multiples of all of the above and a useful present by way of acknowledging the shared experience. Sometimes if a special photo was taken, then the gift would be it signed and framed.

In all the above a thank you note, email or call a few days later would finish the process.

...about Australia and its customs, but for us a note letting us know you had a good time is entirely sufficient. Anything else you do is gravy.

IOW, it's letting us know that the time together was worthwhile is way more important than any material gift.

For years when we were boatless, I'd bring all of the food and beverages. For a weekend, I'd buy dinner out too. It almost ALWAYS results in an invite back!

Dear Skipper - Many thanks for the sail last week. I had an absolute blast. Let me know next time you are going to clean the boat. I'd love to come down and scrub the decks!

If the skipper accepts you may become permanent crew. If the skipper declines at least you offered.
