Here we are 200 miles off South Carolina in the middle of the gulf stream. I am taking a picture from the crossbeam of my reflection in the water.

Have seen it several times: off the FL coast, in the Windward Passage, Gulf of Mexico. Not all that rare.

That is actually a beautiful pic! (except for your shadow lol) Did you take that specifically for me? Just love the shade of blue in the water!

Yes, I've seen it like glass several times while on patrol in Navy Destroyers. It truly is amazing when its like a mirror and you are cutting through the water at good speed.

Once, in the middle of the Tasman Sea, an area normally noted for rather rough conditions.

Then a day later it was 35 to 40 kts.

I once saw water as smooth as glass about 50 miles off Galveston, Texas. Then a cold front moved through. The temperature dropped 15 degrees in a few minutes and we were bucking 15 foot seas all the way back to Galveston.

I've seen it like that out in the Gulf of Mexico, even as far out as the "Middle Grounds". More often though, we only see it up to 20-ish miles offshore.
