Could it have been Earthrace, on the final part of its record-breaking world transit? It finished in Sagunto, Spain.

Yeup that is Peter and his Earth Race boat. They set a new record. The hull is a Wave Piecer design.

They did abandon the first attempt once, not sure but I think it was engine problems.

One of the reasons the first attempt was abandoned was after running over a fishing skiff that had no lights showing, off (I think Guatemala) and killing one of the fishermen they spent some considerable time basically under arrest before going to court and sorting it out (making payment to the relatives)they also had problems with delaminating carbon propellors etc.

Whilst underway to to San Jose, Earthrace collided with a fishing skiff off the coast of Tiquisate, about 45 miles (70 kilometers) south of Guatemala City. The accident occurred at about 12:30AM, on March 18, 2007.

Earthrace has had other mishaps in Latin American waters. According to reports, the vessel's propellers nearly failed on the way to Panama, and the boat was briefly fired upon and searched in October by the Colombian navy.

Now that you mentioned that, I think you're right as I wasn't for sure what the reason was.
