It is quite legendary story for Russian Navy

In May 1829, near Bosphorus, Russian brig MERKURIJ (Commander Kazarsky) came to contact with Turkish fleet. Two ships of the line, Selimyeh and Real Bey were dispatched to intercept intruder. Kazarsky intentionally put his ship between the Turks. Their artillery, as for all the fleet was not very well trained, made more damage to each other, than for low Russian ship. On the other hand MERKURIJ's heavy gun-howitzers (somewhat similar to British carronades) had no troubles with aiming well.
Selimyeh first and then Real Bey were disabled in quite short time and MERKURIJ escaped

Other Aivazovsky painting is of MERKURIJ after the battle:

Some great marine art available at Art Marine | Geoff Hunt RSMA

Geoff Hunt has illustrated the Patrick O'Brian and the Julian Stockwin books (amongst others) but the pictures at the web site can not be shown here.
