Rembrandt - "The Storm on the Sea of Galilee"

Stolen, unrecovered. Hanging on the wall of some evil super villain somewhere.

The true beauty of The Raft is that not only is the final painting on display but Gericault's working drafts are also hanging in the Louvre. Even is you (like me) are not a full on art geek, it is nifty to see the evolution of a classic work of art.

I have heard a couple different logics behind Pig and Chicken tattoos. I like this artwork particularly because the chicken has Water Wings.

Just noticed the four hundred year old boat hook, hasn't hardly changed a bit!

Re: Great Works of Art!

One my favorites: "Saint Brendan and the Sea Monsters," by Robert Gibbings. There's a bit in the old Brendan myth that while out at sea he came upon a school of whales, and preached to them. This is a wild 20th-century interpretation, which captures all the mysteries of the deep.

It brings to mind some of Rockwell Kent's nautical illustrations, which I'll try to track down and post.

Re: Great Works of Art!

Here are a few from Rockwell Kent. His "N by E" is a great read.

Also, on a side note about the original post, "Watson and the Shark" -- Watson survived, minus one leg, and commissioned the paintings some 25 years later. Pretty amazing.
