It actually a type of green marble carved and polished to look like water.

Here's "The Storm In The Sea Of Galilee" by Rembrant which I think I posted earlier in the thread. One of my favs. Both Rembrant himself as well as the artist who created the composite photo reproduction have included self-portraits, guess who they are.

Again I have to point out the boat hook, a functional design that hasn't changed much through the centuries.
