Actually, the number is 93%. When making up statistics, or anything else, you should avoid round numbers because they just look like an approximation. The key is to project an impression of exactitude. On the other hand, some numbers are obviously plucked out of thin air. 97% is an example of one of these. I mean come on! 97 is essentially a super-prime number, and nothing in this universe is going to actually be 97. 93, maybe, but definitely not 97.

A friend of mine calls this process of creative precision "DRE", for "Direct Rectal Extraction". Example: "Using the DRE method, we calculate that the gate-count of this integrated circuit will be around 3,700,000." It sounds better than saying ou pulled it out of your *ss.
