Those who use pejorative adages, phrases, quotes, & miss-quotes about the difference between theory & practice, might be advised to discover the differences between “practice” (observation of what is), hypothesis (proposition), and theory (predictive explanation of what is).
In fact, theories explain & predict practice (in it's misused meaning).

At this point I would like to reply with some devastating counter-argument, couched in a similar vein and tinged with a hint of wit and a few (brackets)........but I can't.
........Apart from pointing out that if a word is "Misused" sufficiently it acquires a new or additional meaning (English is cool like that )......me likes to be surfing on the cutting edge

Two things British yachtmen have learned never to take to sea - a naval officer and a wheelbarrow. Well naturally I don't mean you sir!

God does not promise a gentle voyage, only a safe harbor, so Rig Heavy, Reef Early and Pray Often.

Edward Lear's 'The owl and the pussy cat' and 'the jumblies'
The owl and the pussyat went to sea in abeautiful pea green boat. They took some honey and plenty of money wrapped up in a five pound note......
...They sailed away for a year and a day , to the land where the bong-tree stood...
Far and few, far and few is the land where the Jumblies live,
Their heads are blue and their hands are green and they went to sea in a sieve

"Their is nothing wrong with being selfish, cos' no one else will be selfish for you" ( sounds a bit more selfish that it is )
"You ask me why. I asked why not" ( I have had a lot of fun over the years with this one - especially as confuses the cr#p outta folk looking for an agenda, and their deliberately ain't one )
"Do one time no good", "why?" - "angry you" ( late Mrs DOJ explaining that if stabbing someone prudent to do so many times ...... probably shouldn't make me smile so much, but it does )

The Ship That Sails
I'd rather be the ship that sails
And rides the billows wild and free;
Than to be the ship that always fails
To leave its port and go to sea.
I'd rather feel the sting of strife,
Where gales are born and tempests roar;
Than settle down to useless life
And rot in dry dock on the shore.
I'd rather fight some mighty wave
With honour in supreme command;
And fill at last a well-earned grave,
Than die in ease upon the sand.
I'd rather drive where sea storms blow,
And be the ship that always failed
To make the ports where it would go,
Than be the ship that never sailed.

As always, my favorite quotes are from Gord May. Here's his answer to Nicole's question, "What can I expect in my cruising life?"

Everything I need to know I learned from Star Trek! (author unknown)
[sic: Gene Roddenberry]
"How long to re-fit?" -- Kirk,
"Eight weeks. But you don't have eight weeks, so I'll do it for you in two." -- Scotty,
"Do you always multiply your repair estimates by a factor of four?" -- Kirk,
"How else to maintain my reputation as a miracle worker?" -- Scotty,
-----------------------
"Scotty, you're as good as your word." -- kirk,
"Aye sir, the more they overtech the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain." -- Scotty
-----------------------
"How many times da I have to tell ya...the right tool for the right job!" -- Scotty
-----------------------
Scotty: "On Earth, we have a saying: Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."
Chekov: "I know this saying. It was invented in Russia."
-----------------------
Scotty: "The best diplomat that I know is a fully-loaded phaser bank."

Sort of a variant on that one I have read is: The three most worthless things on a ship are a wheelbarrow, a dairy cow and a naval officer. That was on the wall in the ex Rusty Pelican in Alameda seemingly forever.
