Re: Exactly 100 times cheaper and easier

Yeah, but what are the costs to stay there a few months?

I think you guys are deluding yourselves to the actual cost of sailing a boat long distances.

How much is that SSB radio install going to cost you? How far would that get you in air/train fare? Already have a SSB? How bout that water maker? How about that bottom paint, safety harness, new standing rigging, new running rigging, sails? Really guys, there is no comparison.
Of course taking a silver bird is the cheaper and faster option to get to destination, I dont think any one has denied that.

But do you sleep in a cardboard box under a bridge on arrival?
I think you are deluding yourself at not taking in the cost of staying several months or years in luxury or even average waterfront accommodation.

I spent one night last September sleeping under the causeway between terminals at Haneda Airport in Tokyo. It wasn't all *that* bad....

Umm just for giggles, how long does everyone expect that the average Joe will be able to fly anywhere? Every airline in the world with the exception of Emirates is in financial trouble, cutting unprofitable routes, killing off employees etc.

At least with my boat I can come and go as I wish, and have my home at the same time.

Any fool can get on an airplane......
It takes a complete fool to get blown three thousand miles across the ocean in a fiberglass tub....an epic adventure, an accomplishment of only a few.

I did exactly that, 3000 NM across 3 oceans and throw in a ship wreck as well,

An epic adventure, Yep, An accomplishment of a few, Yep.

A ship wreck, Well, thats even fewer, Hahahaha,

Experience of a life time, Yep,

another 3 months and my fibreglass tub will be back in the water for my next foolish adventure, Yep,

Kimberlys here I come, another life time adventure,

Staying in paradise, $7-00 a night, You have to feed your self any way, So food cost is not included, Muscat Cove,

Staying in a hotel in Suva, $300-00 per night, That 42 nights on my boat,

A hotel is only a bed in a room, You can pay $10 or $1000 per night,

But can you walk 10 feet and go swimming or fishing or lay about naked on your deck,
Or lift the anchor and sail away to a better spot in paradise, just because you can,

And your not surrounded by smelly people in transit,

You want to have a smoke, the rigamarol to find some where to smoke, Good grief,

Where can you just pull out alcohol and have a drink, or an impromtu party,

Dont try it on an airplane, Hahahaha,

Try telling the Captain on a plane that you want him to change direction and fly to some where else that you want to go, Hahahaha
When your half way to where ever he's going, Hahahahaha

You can change direction midway on a boat, or just stop and go fishing or have a swim,
You can even have a naked party, Hahahahha

Its a life style, Its not a cost thing that is run by the number crunchers,

Expensive, Yes, Freedom, Yes, The lifestyle, Priceless,

Re: Exactly 100 times cheaper and easier

Flying is like all other public transport, the absolute pits. If i wanted to be treated badly, abused, spend time cramped up with sweaty, loudmouthed, obnoxious and rude examples of the low side of humanity i can go and visit my family. I may fly again, but only if i really have to and i am well sedated.
PS. Flying is also bloody boring, commercially. A little aircraft is a totally different equation, i will give you that.

Coops.

Sorry but flying for me is about as awesome as catching an overcrowded bus these days, and about as comfortable.....

OK, I hate any public transport but it is quicker / easier to get on and off the bus and the queues are shorter

Top post!

I travel for a living sometimes, weeks at a time on the road. Some folks check their itinerary to figure out where they're going; sometimes I check it to figure out where I am. All airports blur into one.

But stress or discomfort? Not really. I generally sleep. Flying a few time zones is little more difficult or stressful than driving to the marina. Just boring.

Life is obviously about the journey. At the beginning and the end, we're all the same.

Thank you! During a Philippine tyohoon we put two 747s in the hanger. Under the wings were packed in the training aircraft including twin turboprops. I have been doing aviation for 30 years and as I looked at the mother duck and her ducklings I refelected again that the 747 takes of at 800,000 pounds. It is an awesome human achievement and I am lucky to be in an industry that still leaves me in awe 30 years in.

In terms of travel ai spent over 210 nights on the road last year. Crossed the pacific 5 times and probably took another dozen rounds trips in the region.

Would I rather be sitting on the boat, hell yes! But ai can't deny that air travel is for getting stuff done. I call it time travel.

Coops.
No no, you are right, flying through the air at 600 mph is way more boring than moving through the water at 4 knots.

I never really understood people on airplanes. They are so jaded. It used to take 40 days to cross the Atlantic and you were lucky to not loose your teeth from scurvy or worse, just die. Now you have people rolling their eyes when they are delayed for an hour and a half. Guys get your head out of the sky mall catalog and look at the clouds....that you are above. Look at the continents and seas that you are soaring over. Has everyone lost their minds?
