Even Billionaires Anchor Out

Russian billionaire's yacht blocking view of Lady Liberty | Daily Mail Online

Have seen Le Gran Bleu anchored south of Liberty Island in the past. Also have seen Abramovich's 160m Eclipse holding station off Governer's Island for weeks at a time but not anchored.

Makes me think of the mega yachts that come into the Bahamas all bunkered up with fuel and with freezers full of food that anchor off shore in the Exumas without ever tying up, only sending their launches in with guest to hang on the beach.

Obviously no place for them to tie up there but that's not where I was going with this.

I see a correlation between those who want an unobscured view of the Statue of Liberty and the entitled landowners in Florida who want anchoring restrictions to ensure an unobstructed view.

Freedom of navigation applies to all.

Not arguing any specific case, but in general, but

Having a legal right does not imply it's OK ethically to feel entitled to interfere with others' enjoyment of a public resource.

The more privileged you are the more considerate you should be of those with less.

Paralex angle on that photo.

Le Grand Blu isn't in front t of Li easy at all but is parked next to her.

It is allowable to anchor there.... But pissing off New Yorkers is not the way to behave.

They could anchor where all those barges are and still get a great view.

Oh, and Depth of Field. The cranes in the background are in good focus... They are bloody miles away. So Le Grand Blu maybe quite some distance too.

Check it on marinetraffic. Com

I agree with what you say John, but human nature is often conflicted between what is ethical and doing your best to provide a great experience for your guests and family, or to promote your business.

Case in point... 2000 Americas Cup in Auckland, the Superyacht I was in command of, became the main sponsor Louis Vuitton's unofficial yacht.

So we were "privledged" to have a reserved spot at the start very close to the line.

At the last minute, our 800 tons, 5 decks would be guided to the front after the LV... VIP's boarded and I hated the fact that we totally blocked so many small yachts who had spent hours holding for what they hoped would be the best view.

It was a stressful time as we picked our way between all kinds of pissed off boats but Louis Vuitton was paying a fortune for that privilege.

I doubt if the government agency with jurisdiction in this case is getting huge sums from that yacht.

Not directly, although they will spend about $2 to 3m within the community on operations.

However the local Corporations who make political contributions do a lot of business with these Owners and want them to have their floating corporate offices well looked after.
