Ella's Pink Baby . . . (Dolphin)

I received an email from a friend relating the story of an extremely rare sight in the natural world - a pink dolphin. The dolphin is an albino, but apparently all known albino dolphins are white. Here's the email:

A Pink Dolphin...awesome! What a treat!

Think Pink . . . You're not seeing the world through rose-colored glasses: this albino dolplin is pink! This unique bottlenose dolphin, first spotted in Lake Calcasieu - an inland saltwater estuary in Louisiana - by boat captain Erik Rue, 42, in 2007, has surfaced again.

Major Attraction . . . Tourists are flocking to the lake in hopes of seeing the unique mammal.

Rare Sight . . . "Pinky" is believed to be the only pink dolphin in the world, and has reddish eyes. The pink dolphin is usually spotted with its dark gray mother.

Unique . . . There are only 14 other known albino dolphins in the world . . . all of them white!

Healthy Glow . . . "The dolphin appears to be healthy and normal other than its coloration, which is quite beautiful, and stunningly pink," said Captain Rue, who estimates he has spotted Pinky more than 40 times.

In the 80’s I used to see them quite often in Hong Kong in the bays where now the new airport has been built. They were a pinkish white

maybe the poor baby needs sun screen. no joke. We have an albino wallaby here at the zoo who has had to be sunscreened since it was born to keep it from turning pink in the sun...

Those were probably not albinos but real Pink Dolphins, a.k.a. Chinese White Dolphins, a humpback dolphin whose Chinese coastal population has pink skin for some reason.

There is also a species of pink river dolphin in the Amazon, they really do look shocking pink (assuming the photo is genuine)!
