I just watched a TV show on the National Geographic channel where they drain the oceans using computer animation. There are some really interesting visuals and great information about underseas mountains, thermal vents, strange life, trenches, mid-ocean ridges, continental plates, etc. As sailors we probably already know much of this stuff, but I learned a quite a few things that I had never known. I found it fascinating.

I think even with google maps, and satellites studying ocean floors (as best they can), there is still probably more known about the surface of the moon than what's below 12k feet down world wide. NG & the Discovery Channel (as well as specialist Oceanographers/Biologists believe we have more unknown species in the oceans yet to be discovered than all the known species, air land & water dwelling combined known now?

It will be incredible indeed as we all learn more in the "discovery" process.

It is a pretty cool show. The Bahama bank is the steepest drop off anywhere on earth... above or below the surface.

I enjoyed the show, also found it interesting that there are moutains ON the sea also. That sea level is higher over structure... that there are truly uphill stretches as well as downhill.

I find it pretty cool how the advertising at the top matches the threads discussion. As I write this there is an advertisement for the same show. I didn't really need to provide a link to the shows website.

I remember my brothers tale of being troubled by sudden errors between DR and Fixes in the late seventies. Turned out he'd crossed a sub-surface mountain and the current had added a day to his solo six weeks from Seychelles to Madagascar.
On the same trip he was worrying about 'voices' at night until he found he'd left the radio on low. Strange things happen at sea.
