Does this Sound Funny ?

A story in Lat 38 (That Sinking Feeling) tells of a 43' Wellcraft sunk at the owner's private dock with all of the expensive electronics removed by thieves. Apparently, the thieves scuttled the boat so there would not be any fingerprints left behind.

Mike

Thieves don't scuttle boats....deadbeats do.

Yup...I smell a rat as well. Most thieves would not know how to pull the drain plug in the sink.

Perhaps the electronics weren't covered by insurance

Perhaps it is not so difficult to collect the fingerprints once the boat is lifted.

Perhaps the boat was broken into as stated and out of shear meanness, the rectums that did so took a knife to a raw water hose to "get even" for having been chased off previously. Marin county may be well-to-do but there has never been a shortage of low-lifes slinking around on the north end of Sausalito and Richardson Bay.

Are you thinking insurance fraud? I guess it sounds funny, probably the thieves are just very angry people who do not want anyone else to enjoy their life.

How on earth would an investigation determine a likely motive for scuttling the boat? This is mere speculation, and very bad reportage.

While i wouldn't argue with your points, Gord, it's worth pointing out that the brief description of the crime in 'Lectronic Latitude was a written account supplied by a woman who works for a diving service, not a reporter for Latitude 38 Publishing. The speculation as to motive is her's, as is the ridiculous notion that sinking the boat was to wash away fingerprints.

Her idle speculation is certainly not the result of any "investigation." To me, it read like any other BS session you'd hear on any dock . . . just a bunch of untrained locals, watching the unusual event and shooting the bull about what must have happened and why.

The truth is that for a property crime like the sinking of the Wellcraft, the police aren't going to do anything more than file a report. The insurance company may wish to pursue a more thorough investigation, but at some point someone with the insurer has to do a cost / benefit analysis and decide whether or not it makes more sense to pursue the criminals or just pay the claim.

And even if the insurer is suspicious that there's something fishy about sinking the vessel after ripping off the electronics, they may still conclude that it's cheaper to pay the claim than try to get to the bottom of what really happened.

I live on a 43' Wellcraft Portofino....and its a BIG BOAT. I find it hard to believe that a "crimminal" sank it! Lot's of work to get her to sink.....something is FISHY!

However I need to find out where I can buy some parts off of her....?

I was talking to some forensics officers investigating a burglary adjacent my place. Unfortunately I had handled some objects that the thieves had dumped in the park. When I apologised the answer was not to worry as they could not get finger prints due the items having been left out in the wet. So maybe there is a chance this is a well educated burglar or fraudster who really does not want to get caught?

Then the motive might have even been vengeance and the owner is being set up to look like the culprit while the perpetrators make a handsome profit?

Likewise, it would not be hard to assume that the suspect list includes persons with an intimate knowledge of that make of boat if not the particular boat?

I also not that being in possession of stolen goods over here is the next best thing to a strict liability offence!
