At least five people have died but more than 800 passengers have been rescued from a ferry that sank in the southern Philippines.
Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo, a coast guard chief, said on Sunday that most of the 847 passengers and 117 crew members on board the Superferry 9 were transferred to two nearby commercial ships about five hours after the ferry began to list
The bodies of two other passengers were later plucked from the sea by fishermen, the coast guard said.
The guard said that three passengers were injured.
Authorities said earlier that some people had jumped into the water in panic before dawn as the vessel began to tilt to the right. The ship sank about six nautical miles off the west coast of Zamboanga peninsula on Mindanao island, Teodoro said

SuperFerry 9 passengers to get assistance

The Aboitiz Transport System (ATS) Corporation on Sunday said passengers of SuperFerry 9, which sank off the western coast of Zamboanga Peninsula, will get assistance from the company, the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) reported.

In a text message to ABS-CBN News, MARINA administrator Ma. Elena Bautista said that Aboitiz has protection and indemnity (P&I) cover.

MARINA said that under Aboitiz's P&I cover, relatives of deceased passengers will receive P200,000 ($4,117 USD), while survivors will receive P50,000 ($1,029 USD) each.

I think it illustrates that the higher safety standards that we have for our merchant fleet in the US is worth the cost.
