They sure do Kai! Here's one of Canada's favorite bands....
Biographyby Craig Harris

The sea chanty tradition of Newfoundland is fused with the spirit and energy of contemporary rock and popular music by Great Big Sea.....

They do a lot of traditional Celtic folk songs like "The Night Patty Murphy Died & Barrett's Privateers" & "What do you do with a drunken sailor?" but they've also got a lot of their own tunes that are absolutely incredible such as "Sea of No Cares",and "When I'm King".

When I Am King music video featuring Great Big Sea from the album Something Beautiful

We had a top Kiwi band that was called Hello Sailor. But they didn't do any sea songs that I can think of.

One just for Christmas

Sung to "Jingle Bell's"

Sailor's Bells Trim the Sails Anchors all away
Oh What fun it is to sail On a windy winters day A

Ocean swells Fishy smells Neptune's deep in bed
Chart a course to windward on A compass line we head

Slicing through the foam
On a 40 foot O'Day
Over the waves we go
Heeling all the way

Bosun's whistle blow
Main is pulled in tight
Oh what fun is to sing and sail
a Pirate's song tonight

Repeat chorus

Now it's time to tack
Better watch your head,
or a Boom will swing across the pit
And you'll be getting' wet!

First mate needs a beer
Captains drinkin' rum
Crew mates shout a boisterous cheer
We're have'n so much fun. Hoy!

Repeat chorus

Merry Christmas

Probably playing the bars around Kings Cross with a name like that.

BTW and here's you a Kiwi Wheels and you havn't mentioned that greatest of all Kiwi bands the mighty Split Enz and "Six Months in a Leaky Boat". Fabulous song.

As Dave and Audrey havn't answered you questions , WPA, was a Melbourne band that did play in Sydney a fair bit. Whether they would ever have done that hoary old funk chestnut I'm not sure but there lead singer was a fellow by thename of Mick Thomas and they did mainly original material in their prime. Perhaps 20 years back they did the odd cover like that but I'd like to think not. Which is only cos I loath funk.

For those of you who don't know it,Kiwiville has given Oz some of our best and brightest. They come over here and we promptly claim them as our own. Sadly they won't take effing Kylie or that damn Kidman woman in return nor will they reclaim Russell bloody Crowe but Crowded House and Split Enz (not to mention Phar Lap and Benji Marshall) at least partly make up for that. One of Kvilles greatest exported talents is a fella named John Clark who had a hand in a little flick called Footrot Flats with a soundtrack that includes Dave Dobbins "Slice of Heaven". Great talent, good song.

There is a Canadian, Eileen Quinn, who does music for the nautically afflicted. Almost everyone cruising the Bahamas and south have heard her. She has 5 CDs and there all great. She hits very close to home with the lyrics. See her site http://www.eileenquinn.com/

Our boat, Sunspot Baby, is named for the Bob Seger song of the same name. You can see a bit about it and hear the song at http://www.stateham.com/sunspotbaby/Name.htm

The Barefoot Man http://www.barefootman.com/ also has some great stuff.

John Clark used to give us hours of entertainment when I was a teenager. He was a Farmer Character(farmer is called a cocky in NZ) called "Fred Dagg" and had several brothers called Trev, Trev, Trev and Trev. Some of the best comodey he has ever done and I have ever seen. Bloody Brilliant!!!!

Sorry I was a bit slow getting back to you Charlie but tdw got it right - Weddings Parties Anything were from melbourne and I used to see them on a regular basis in Sydney. I never saw them with a female singer but that doesnt mean it didnt happen as a one off - if the band you saw had an accordian player, it just might be. I miss seeing those boys they were fab - best gig I ever saw were the Pogues, WPA and a band from syd called Roaring Jack all in one line up somewhere on the northern beaches we bounced all night and screamed ourselves absolutley hoarse
ahh memories

For some reason it slipt through the cracks here as well.

Heres a good album I just found out about called Rogues Gallery, with Nick Cave, Bryan Ferry, Sting , Bono , Stan Ridgway and Lou Reed to name a few.

Amazon.com: Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs, and Chanteys: Music: Various Artists

Make sure you click on More about this product for a sampling of the songs.
