Irish Rover, sung by the Pogues and The Dublinners is a good one.

The Irish Rover

Another favourite is the one that Rick [knottybuoyz] mentioned Barrets Privateers, but I reckon "Weddings Parties Anything " does the best version

HowlSpace

But one of my favourites is Deep Water by Richard Clapton

Song Lyrics

Not a sailing song as such, but we thought of calling the newie "Deep Water" because of the chorus

CHORUS:
Deep Water - I'm caught up in it's flow,
If I'm in over my head, I'd be the last to know

Sort of made sense I reckon

Dave

PS Bloody hell, you've gotta be quick, AK pipped me at the post on the Pogues, Good onya. Black Beer Bad

Yeah, the Black was OK, it was the cocky cage mouth and the sledge hammer blows to the head the next day that left me a bit cold.

Can't find the hungover emoticon, so a sad one will have to do

Fred Eaglesmith - Ship

Seems like I've been out here, in stormy seas.
About as long as I can stand,
And it's like you send me another wave
Everytime I catch my breath
I've trimmed my sails, I've set my course
Again Lord and again,
Lord if you can find me a place to land
My ship needs to come in.

There's dark clouds to my left Lord, Dark clouds to my right
There's thunder and there's lightning
I keep sending out my signals of distress
But there's no one to see them
And the waves crash up over my bow
And soak me through my skin
Lord if you could find me a place to land
My ship needs to come in.

If you could clear the skies Lord for just one minute
And I could see the stars
I could find my points and head on out
Try Lord just once more
But Lord I'm beat up and I'm broken, my light is getting dim
Lord if you could find me a place to land
My ship needs to come in.

(okay, so it's not Jimmy Buffet or the Irish Rovers but I love it. Not everything needs to be so bloody cheerful, misery works for me now and then.)

Tom Waits did a wonderful things years ago called (I think) Shiver me Timbers.
Randy Newman, Sail Away.
Townes Van Zandt , Blue Wind

And a real personal favourite
Lyle Lovett, If I had a Boat

If I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

If I were Roy Rogers
I'd sure enough be single
I couldn't bring myself to marrying old Dale
It'd just be me and trigger
We'd go riding through them movies
Then we'd buy a boat and on the sea we'd sail

And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

The mystery masked man was smart
He got himself a Tonto
'Cause Tonto did the dirty work for free
But Tonto he was smarter
And one day said kemo sabe
Kiss my ass I bought a boat
I'm going out to sea

And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

And if I were like lightning
I wouldn't need no sneakers
I'd come and go wherever I would please
And I'd scare 'em by the shade tree
And I'd scare 'em by the light pole
But I would not scare my pony on my boat out on the sea

And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

(alright, yes, I am miserable old fart and a tad weird as well. life can do that to a person)

then of course as it Christmas - Pogues, Fairytale of New York. THE best Chistmas song ever written, IMHO. Absolutely nothing to do with sailing.

and a final PS - Anything that Weddings Parties Anything did is fine by me. Mick Thomas is an absolute ripper.

Actually downloaded every version of "Barrets Privateers" off of Limewire today, and without a doubt WPA is by far the better version so says I.

At the risk of being chastised by the mod again, here's more shameless self promotion. But I think it's worth it. My band partner, Colin, wrote a song a couple of years ago about the ICW on the east coast. It's called The ICW Blues. It became a favorite in Georgetown last winter amongst the cruisers. We perform it here as well and always get a great response to it. Not just because it's a cool boating song, but because it really rocks when the 2 of us do it live. We also do a pretty good Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
You can hear a milder version of Colin doing the ICW Blues on our home page. Scroll down to the bottom and you'll see a player. If you don't select the ICW Blues, a 7 minute sample of our music starts playing.
Hope you like it.

ICW BLUES
I've got a bluewater sailboat with a deep draft keel,
But I'm powering up the inside just to see how it feels,
The weather on the ocean is windy and rough,
But driving up the ditch is just as tough,

I'm feeling sad, I've got it bad,
I've got the ICW Blues.

I had to slow down to get a slow pass,
I couldn't stand that power boat right on my stern,
The current's on the nose, I'm making one knot,
We won't be there till midnight but the crabs are in the pot,

I'm feeling sad, I've got it bad,
I've got the ICW Blues.

When October came, the Chesapeake got cold,
I'm too far north, this weather's getting old,
Hurricanes in front of us, cold fronts to the rear,
I think I'll drop my anchor give my sorrows to a beer.

I've feeling sad, I've got it bad,
I've got the ICW Blues.

The ditch is getting shallow, I think I'll run a ground,
I'm looking for an anchorage, but there are none around,
I've got to keep going and plowing along,
Bahamas are in front of me and keep me going on.

I'm feeling sad, I've got it bad,
I've got the ICW Blues.

Dave & Audrey:

Is Weddies Parties Anything a band from Sydney NSW. I remember hearing them in a small venue in Double Bay damn near twenty years ago. If its the same group the play a hell of a rendition of "I Can't Stop the Rain." I don't remember the lead singer but there was a gal who belted that song out. She was incredible.

I like them all, but here's the current favorite by Mark Knopfler. "The Trawleran's Song". Very mellow song and if you know of the watermen, the words ring true. http://www.absolutelyrics.com/lyrics/view/mark_knopfler/the_trawlerman's_song/

Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald ranks at the top for me. Sloop John B is also good. If I am in the right mood, anything Jimmy Buffet, but I have to say Migrative would top that list. Irish Rover is also amongst the top ten.

Real blokes don't do singing;-)

But I must say, I like "Sailing" by Christopher cross, "We are Sailing" by Rod Stewart, "Hi Calypso" by John Denver and "Cool Change" by LRB. LRB's original keyboardest is a good friend of mine by the way.
I seem to remember Wet Wet Wet did a sailing song. I can remember seeing a video of (what's his names?it's on the tip of my tongue) boat on the video/sound track. I think he does competitive sailing still today.
