Cruisers Using Bean Bag Chairs

i was wondering if there are many cruisers using bean bag chairs. i've heard from a few people that they are pretty popular. where are you getting your bean bag chairs? i was interested in getting one, but wanted to get some feedback to see if it would be worth it. i found some on mojosac, lovesac, chillsac, and a couple other sites... any suggestions?

No, but was thinking an eight-foot sofa would be nice.

Re: Cruisers Using Bean Bag Chairs

I would think you'd need a pretty big boat to use, let alone store, a couple of bean bag chairs. Personally I prefer the Sport-a-Seat, the original thank you, not the West Marine knockoff. Mine are still going strong after more than 10 years.

Rich

Sport a seat - Cockpit cushions, cockpit seats, folding seats, portable seats, sailboat cushions, helm seats.

No, it more than breaks the 2 use rule. Maybe I'll try using a spinnaker as a bean bag chair.

That's not only a commendable attitude, but an awfully good idea. I got through grad school using a bagged spinnaker as a reading lounge.

The downside is that, even to this day, I can't go below to grab a spinnaker without experiencing a bit of homework anxiety.

Re: Cruisers Using Bean Bag Chairs

My Parets used two bean bag chairs made from sunbrella on their 37ft boat during their circumnavigation. The chairs were pear shaped and only half full. They were perfect! You could stuff them anywhere to get em out of the way and were great to conform to the surface you wanted to sit on (good for a heeling sailboat). I have plans to made two for Rain Dog. The ready made bean bags are way too big and way too full . Anyways mom would replace the beans about every year or two.
Cheers,
Erika

Re: Cruisers Using Bean Bag Chairs

On VALIS we usually have a couple of bean bag chairs for the Hawaii race and return. They are very comfortable, and the crew loves them.

By the end of the trip I personally come to hate them because they are always getting in the way. When things are about to get "exciting" on deck, the first thing I usually do is violently toss the beanbags down the companionway.

I do have to admit that they are comfortable, and I will no doubt get some again before the next race. I like to keep my crew happy.

I had two mini waterproof bean bags that were great for cockpit use.
Very comfortable and avoided the dreaded numb bum!

Re: Cruisers Using Bean Bag Chairs

We had 2 on the previous boat (a LN35), but we resisted them for several years.
After buying a couple of kid sized ones, we sewed up sunbrella covers to match our sail cover and exterior boat trim.
They were excellent in many ways, not in the way like I thought they'd be.
Our cat loved them as well.

On our current 33' trimaran, we now have 2 in their original covers (purchased from overstock.com)
Kid size again.
They weigh nothing, and can be tossed anywhere out of the way.
I'd buy again if they went overboard.

Re: Cruisers Using Bean Bag Chairs

We used to get what was called a "Sun Berg"
A mesh bean bag made for use in pool

Cant get them anymore but I was wondering about something like this

Inflatable (so weigh nothing and easily stored away)
Doubles as a bed
Could be lounged on in water or beach

Re: Cruisers Using Bean Bag Chairs

We don't cruise...we're weekend worriors, we love our been bag and will get another as soon as we find one.
It only gets used on the fore or aft deck, generally stored in the v-birth.

As for the two use rule:
its a hell of a flotation device
if you set it alight its the source of a lot of energy....or signal device, of course the fumes are bad for ya.
also as a material for repairs or something else, remember when we were kids and would melt/burn the polystyrein cup over the camp fire...remember those flaming, dripping blobs...must be loads of uses there?

Considering two for the interior... turning quarter berths into storage areas with sliding bins... idea is stick em in the exit/seat area at the top instead of new foam.
Only worry is will I still have sitting headroom...

Surprise, surprise!!--turns out to be the perfect multi use boat item.
Also solves my upright teak coaming problem on long tacks.
