Higher income, meet lower education, ingrained parochialism and suspicion of institutions.

Even a blue-collar American is richer than a fair proportion of the rest of the planet. Combine that with a near-limitless supply of trashed raw materials, and it's pretty easy to build a boat, or a "compound in the woods for one's cultists" and follow one's hallucination of choice.

The sea doesn't recognize rights, but will honour responsibilities (like knowing it's necessary to grasp how the hell to sail safely) by killing you less frequently than if you are praying when you should be sealing hatches and heaving to.

The very thing I love about the sea is its vast impersonality. It really means it's up to me to avoid injury and death. The sea itself does not appear to have feelings on the matter!
