Re: Couple Flees America, Gets Tax Payer Rides Home

I gues the Lord sent them a message. "WTF, are you out of your minds?"

Surely they'd have been happy just drifting knowing the Bible is right and God would see them through.
Heaven knows how they were navigating...

"decided to take a leap of faith and see where God led us"

This sounds awfully Jesusy to me.

BTW, I'm not anti religion, but I don't like when people defer responsibility to a higher power (or anyone) because thinking is too hard.

Higher income, meet lower education, ingrained parochialism and suspicion of institutions.

Even a blue-collar American is richer than a fair proportion of the rest of the planet. Combine that with a near-limitless supply of trashed raw materials, and it's pretty easy to build a boat, or a "compound in the woods for one's cultists" and follow one's hallucination of choice.

The sea doesn't recognize rights, but will honour responsibilities (like knowing it's necessary to grasp how the hell to sail safely) by killing you less frequently than if you are praying when you should be sealing hatches and heaving to.

The very thing I love about the sea is its vast impersonality. It really means it's up to me to avoid injury and death. The sea itself does not appear to have feelings on the matter!

Then again ... them at least had an ADVENTURE.

How many of us wait till retired, insured, EPIRB fully charged ... belt&braces and two hulls (just in case) ...

They were out there, doing sailing, or drifting, possibly having the adventure of their lives!

How many of us can claim a similar achievement ever?

At least they're wearing construction hard hats. Guess they forgot though that the boom is at the back of the boat.

While I get your point, neither extreme is any better. I think we can meet at a happy medium, and adventure wisely.

From the link

"Their flights home were arranged by U.S. Embassy officials, Gastonguay said. The U.S. State Department declined to comment on Sunday."

I'm fed up of paying taxes to bail people who make stupid decisions out!
