I think this thread has now drifted even further off course than the family in the Pacific.

Indeed. Perhaps that is where they would have ended up without assistance? Irony is lovely yet deadly

I'm fed up of paying taxes to bail people who make stupid decisions out!

You mean like all those guys running Wallstreet?

It's pure and simple envy mate, they thought they were sending us to hell on the other side of the world and it turned out to be paradise.

Um, that one's pretty much dead opposite of a cop-out... I was raised on it, it means MOL, 'God helped you by giving you the brains to figure it out and the body to do the hard work yourself'. Praying's great, but if you want a house, pick up a hammer.

Exactly what I was looking for. From San Diego to Hawaii is a slow moving 21 +/- days so after how long did they realize they are lost?

The surviving 3 of 5 Mexican fishermen were lost at sea for 270 + days almost got to Kiribati on a 28 foot boat.

OMG - you sure have that right. There is no fixing stupid. The kids are doomed to wander the earth confused or worse.

We see stupid every time we leave or enter the marina. we consider it entertainment.

Hiya Boatie! Are you referring to yourself as a simple minded "feller"? Nah! I don't believe you! You look to me like the canary who ate the cat!

If stupidity were a bar to care and compassion, then I suppose when the bungee-jump cord accidentally breaks, or the skydiver's parachute opens a little too late so he breaks both ankles, then no medical care for either one of them.

I'm used to the insults and hostility to religion by now as if all Christians are wild-eyed idiots, it's a national sport in the U.S. especially lately, but oh well, what else is new - but all these scornful comments about taxpayer funded rescues - oh that's rich, when nearly every member on this forum, no matter how cautious and well prepared, is engaged in an activity that is ultimately elective and recreational.

I concur with you about religion bashing being the sport-du-jour. It's tacky, petty, and somewhat ironic in that a bunch of people are telling a bunch of other people to not tell a bunch of other people how to live.

But regarding the taxypayer funded rescues, I'm a taxpayer and you'll never see me deriding my nation other than commentary on how to improve it.
