Chandlery in San Franciso?

Before flying back to Tahiti, I need to fill up my spare parts. Which LARGE chandlery would you recommend in the Bay area, we stay South of SF for a week. I specifically look for some odd Harken parts on top of standard rigging.

We sail a Lagoon 440 for 16 months now and another 36 to go...

You basically have two choices; one of many West Marine stores and Svendsen's in Alameda. Various other boatyards will have chandleries of sorts, but large is probably not an accurate descriptor.

If you have time for things to be shipped to you, check out Defender catalog. West will price match, or anyhow, they used to. Personally, I liked to support Svendsen's, and there is a West nearby to them.

I hope your boat appreciates all the gifts.

All excellent options. There is also Blue Pelican in Alameda, for used consignment parts. The prices vary. A lot of stuff is junk for sale at over-optimistic prices, but some is worth looking at.

and also right around the corner from svends.

you will find a lot more in inventory at svends than at west and spend a lot less too. pelican is hit or miss but DEF worth a trip for the experience if not the huge $$ savings (assuming you find what you are looking for).

i strongly encourage you to buy everything tagged 1119 and pay over asking price... actually. just go in and tell them u want to give cash to consigner 1119. please and thank you.

:P

good luck

Defender will deliver to your hotel in two days. It is a pretty good service. I once ordered from San Diego on a Friday morning and the stuff arrived at 11 am Monday.

Getting to Svendsen's without a car might be a chore. It would be around a 30 minute walk from Fruitvale train station.

Svendsen in Alameda is by far the best.

Remember to ask for something you don't see, they keep a lot stuff in the warehouse.

There is a West Marine store just off Route 101 in South SF. Svend's and Blue Pelican are very good, too, if you want to make the trip over the Bay.
