Re: Captain Cook in a Google Book

Do a search too on 'Fitzroy', the skipper of one of the 3? ships that formed Darwin's enlightening voyage.
He formed the first Weather Forecasting bureau, publishing daily reports in the Times.
His sailing abiolioties and grew management are discussed, and it does give a great insight into sailing in uncharted waters.
In his honour the sea area north of trafalgar was named after him, probably because for lil ole england it's where most of our weather comes from, though at the moment we are in a string of lows from somewhere beyond iceland, with damaging winds expected later this week.

Very unfortunate man fitzroy, died in penury, forgotten for decades.

Re: Captain Cook in a Google Book

Nice thread. Cook was a sailor's sailor, as they say. I have been looking for a good read about his voyages.

Thankee.

Enjoy. Good motivational reading when one is inside on a cold night. Some less obvious things I've noted while reading about him are his keen eye for detail and the organization of his crew. I overlooked these points at first. Cook wasn't just a sailor. He was the first point of contact for the British empire with the new kingdoms he discovered. That made him as much an ambassador as a navy man.
