Canadians - Help! Need winter wilderness cabin to rent.

I know the off topic forum is still meant to be about boating... So:

I live on a boat but want to rent a private cabin in some snowbound wilderness area with a view, native animals, wolves especially, next January or Feb, for 1 month.

Trying to find the right internet sites and forums has been a bit difficult so perhaps you can point me in the right direction? I am Australian so I dont know Canada much, but i have seen photos of snow.

Real estate agents/ Vacation rental companies are crazy expensive and not what i want. More thinking of a private place someone doesnt use in winter.

Perameters:

Wilderness area - but i dont even know where to start looking.
Close to a town for access.
Snowbound
View - of close, middle distance to see animals.
Large window onto view
Log fire and wood available
Internet (ok, shutup, but maybe possible)
Privately owned, as in not part of a resort etc.
Wildlife dense
Rent: something I could afford and be a nice bonus for the owner.

Basically I want to veg out in front of a fire in the woods for a month and watch what happens with nature and wildlife. I don't shoot, trap or hurt critters or the environment.

Photo below shows the kind of thing.

After that i can go sailing again. Oh, see this thread is boating related!

PM me if you dont want to reply in thread.

Hey Mark, we have 50 acres in northern Alberta with elk, deer, moose, bears, coyotes, wolves. But no cabin, only a holiday trailer. Propane furnace.
I do have an uncle who has just what you are looking for, but he's pretty picky on who uses it. I will mention you to him and see what happens.

I have a friend who is the caretaker of a large resort in the mountains that closes down for the winter. He gets a little stir crazy by the time February rolls around. I think he would probably pay you to take over for a month instead of you paying him. PM me if interested.

Oh, I have another friend with a cabin who also happens to be a big fan of your acting. If you don't mind some company I am sure she would love to have you visit for a while...

Re: Canadians - Help! Need winter wilderness cabin to rent.

I own a beautiful cottage in Ritters Arm Newfoundland. It lay between Botwood and Fortune Bay. Its oceanfront on Notre Dame Bay. You could anchor out in front of it. I had thought about letting it out for the winter months. Running water will be difficult however since the water lines are not winterized. Has paved road access. 40 min drive to nearest grocery store. Just beautiful location in Old Newfoundland. I thought about selling it for 40K or trading it for a sailboat in the South Pacific. I dont know yet as I am torn. I'll get back to you on this one. Cheers.....Tim Malone

I know some one who has a cabin similar to that in the Rocky Mountains; he used to be the superintendent of Banff National Park. I don't know if it is available, as I think he and his wife spend time there. That being said, you could not get to know a better naturalist. Just be aware, you may be enticed to do a significant amount of walking and hiking in the winter.. the man is a machine! PM me if I should contact him.

Looks like you're getting some good leads Mark. I can't offer any shacks although I did live for the last 10 years in exactly the spot you're looking for; a cabin on the shore of Lake Superior.

Anyway, my offering is to suggest you look at house/pet sitting opportunities. We just landed a winter gig in the BC interior. Free lodging, (just pay for some utilities) in thr Okanagan. I used housecarere.com to find our spot. There are others.

Mark. Before you sign any long term agreements find a walk in freezer where you are and hang out in that for 3 or 4 hours. Are you sure you know what you are getting yourself into

If you start to suffer sailboat withdrawal :

There are many locations across Canada, besides this one.

Enjoy your visit/ Len

Yes, of course i f'ing do!
I trekked 3 weeks to Everest Base camp in -20C and a week in Siberia at -30C.

One can't expect to understand a northern winter sitting in a casino in Las Vegas!!!

Its like so many cruisers. They only want the life when the wind doesnt blow and the ice in the margaritas doesn't melt.

Life is not a Facebbok photo!
